I don't know - it would work and then it wouldn't so I am thinking maybe the regulator.
Worn brushes will cause a intermittent problem, Phil do you have a Drill press, it would be strong and fast enough, for testing

The Flywheel has 93 teeth and the split gears on the Alternator Shaft Assembly have 50 teeth (images available) = 1/1.86 ratio.
Engine rpm to alt rpm
1,100 -> 2,046
2,200 -> 4,092
3,300 -> 6,138
5,000 -> 9,300
Years ago Jon Lewis of Lewis-Pin fame made and donated a v-belt pulley adapter for the alternator shaft. I still have it to loan out. I wouldn’t buy a used unit from a breaker yard without confirmation that they’d tested it (should have the equipment to do so) and it passed.

The 'rest of the story' -
I did replace the alternator and that fixed the issue.
I've not 'explored' the 'replacing the regulator' as Uncle Phil's Parts Department had a working 40amp readily available ...
