Hwy 129 Tail of the Dragon Repaving

Well, hopefully it’ll keep the squids’ speeds down a bit. I’ve been there on a weekend…bad idea as that’s when the really aggressive riders come out.

Last month Saturday, April 27, seems like a good a place as any to post. The most reserved I've ever ridden it, it was more enjoyable. If you turn the sound down a little you can hear some great growls from her once in a while. There was minimum traffic, it was building at the gas stop.

I went there 2 years ago and riding it was fun and to check it off the bucket list, looking at the gouge marks in the corners was eye opening, Now a whole bunch of new marks will appear.
New parts on Tree Of Shame?

It was a bucket list thing (I’ve been on it a few times and I’m not in a great hurry to go back). Some of the tight turns are a little bit much for me- I like the longer sweepers of the Cherohala Skyway and the Blue Ridge Parkway. A lot of the younger riders feel they have to ‘prove themselves’ on the Tail of the Dragon, frequently with disastrous results.

I did like stopping at the Tapoco lodge though.

Rode it a few years back, Labor Day weekend... very busy with bikes and race cars, still enjoyed it. Best done during the week.

I'm heading that way in a few weeks and like to ride it a few times (usually on weekdays). Hopefully the repaving won't spoil the party too much.

I would avoid completely... if they are repaving then they'll likely shut down one lane sections and you'll have to wait for a escort car ... no fun, especially during the summer...

That does not look like it is on Hwy 129. That is not new pavement and is slurry sealed old pavement. There would not be a crack like that in new pavement. There are also no center or side lines painted, and that traffic lane is way too wide. Someone posted this same photo on a Goldwing forum that I am on. They got it off Facebook, so take it for what it is worth. Something like this is for slow speed parking areas. It is an accident and lawsuit waiting to happen on a public road. Until someone can go out and confirm that they are there, I am not believing it. Just another internet myth.

You're probably right. The Dragon is the last road I'd want to be stuck waiting on. A few years ago a car drove off the road and traffic was backed up for quite a while. Due to the pitch of the road where I was, it was difficult to keep the bike upright - too steep to put it on the side stand!

Unfortunately not many alternatives if your coming from the north and want to get to the good roads in NC just south of the dragon.

Not deals gap. I found nothing on the road repair lookup sites either. The pic is from the company that sells the dividers.
