When I wanted to ride Highway 50 and then Highway 6 later I spent a lot of time looking at older maps in online archives. You can get a real good sense of where the original roads went and by checking current maps against them, figure out the original routes. However, over many years, the government may reroute the highway several times over other different roads.

So, i rode some of 66 today and it disappeared. Found it again and it disappeared. It started to rain and i could not find 66 anywhere. So, i spent six hours riding around the mark twain natl forest in the rain. It was really nice, even if my hands are wrinkled like i soaked in the tub too long. Got a motel to dry out and walked out front and there is rt 66!

Rt 66 in oklahoma is a much easier ride. They mark 66 three diff ways and make it pretty obvious. About 20 mi west of tulsa suffering with this camp spot, which is free if i can get away with it. $7 if i cant! Its pretty hot! Im wondering if i should hold off on the southwest till this heat calms. I can see my kids and get back on later. Hope you are right but the news tells me record breaking temps.
1 over the old high is a record. And besides you have the great new 15' bag to sleep in. I have a sheet cut in two halves that I carry for hot nights.

@Pop-Pop , as you will enter new-mexico, on I-40, first exit right after the border with texas, or last exit in texas, since it sits on the border, don't miss Glenrio, a real deserted ghost town. Old route 66 goes across it.

It's a quick stop, and you can get back on I-40 after.

Went to bed without the rain fly. Every once in a while, id wake up, see the stars, and fall back to sleep with a smile! But what got me up was the light show! There were two heat lightning factions fighting it out across the lake. What a show! I made my coffee, turned off my lite and just watched in awe! Touring gives me so many firsts. I get to taste things ive never tasted, do things ive never done and redo those many things ive forgotten about. Living in the city has many blessings, but sitting here, watching, takes me so far away from boston.

It was great having breakfast with you this morning, Pop-Pop!

Met at (where else?) the iconic Pop's Restaurant on RT 66, and let our twin ST's rest while we ate.

Safe journeys, and perhaps we can meet up again for some ribs in Wellston on your way back through the Sooner State!
