Get a 1996 or newer ST1100. I just did the 40 amp alternator or my 95 ST1100 and If I had known better I would have purchased a 96 or newer model. I will tell you that it is the smoothest and most dependable motorcycle I've ever owned.

The big 'wear' item on the ST1100s are the rear splines - if they have not been properly lubed with moly they can wear away pretty quickly.
Unfortunately, the only way to check it is to pull the rear wheel off and take a look.
Ok cool thank you I'll keep that in mind cheers

I'm looking at buying a 1995 st1100 with low klms but no charge and battery going flat on a ride.... the price is 2k so is it worth getting and fixing the alternator or reg or both or is it going to cost more than the bike is worth ?
Hi Dave, Mate did you ever get that bike in the end ? I have a 93 with the same problem and just starting to source parts now.. cheers, Geoff
