Get a 1996 or newer ST1100. I just did the 40 amp alternator or my 95 ST1100 and If I had known better I would have purchased a 96 or newer model. I will tell you that it is the smoothest and most dependable motorcycle I've ever owned.
Ok cool thank you I'll keep that in mind cheersThe big 'wear' item on the ST1100s are the rear splines - if they have not been properly lubed with moly they can wear away pretty quickly.
Unfortunately, the only way to check it is to pull the rear wheel off and take a look.

Hi Dave, Mate did you ever get that bike in the end ? I have a 93 with the same problem and just starting to source parts now.. cheers, GeoffI'm looking at buying a 1995 st1100 with low klms but no charge and battery going flat on a ride.... the price is 2k so is it worth getting and fixing the alternator or reg or both or is it going to cost more than the bike is worth ?
