I haven't changed my own tires for years, but if I were I think I'd be somewhat leery of using silicone on the tire bead, too.Silicone on the tire bead??!! I wouldn't be using that!

I saw that earlier in the thread, but so for have been able to get by without one, may check it out.No-Mar has a Third Hand tool that is absolutely terrific!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't really have a technical answer other than Silicone is forever. Relatively speaking that is. Rhuglide soap (for tires) turns tacky when it dries. Silicone will stay slippery forever. Generally it wouldn't pose an issue but if you took a nail and lost air, the bead might separate from the rim (when you want it to stick if at all possible.) Then there is the possibility of having it migrate to the tread, etc. I don't know, I suppose it does the job at a minimum of risk but I would stick with soap to avoid any possible problems. Why?
I have three. I think that was how many came in the Package or as a set. They are very handy. I think that you definitely need more than one though.I was wondering about those... how many do you use?
