Is This a New ST Brake Part?

I found this (see attachments) floating in the front brake master cylinder. Nothing like it in the other two master cylinders. Didn't have it in the master cylinders of my '04 or '07 STs. Is it new for '10?

It s a green method of conserving brake fluid.
Sorta like a brick in the toilet tank.:04biker:

I think my goldwings had those, can't remember. But, they are a honda part.

Urban Legend! Believe it or not, its packing material to protect the return shield in shipping. Sometimes the assemblers don't know what it is, so they leave them in there floating on the brake fluid! Over the years, its been explained as all sorts of things, but alas, its simply packing foam.

I've heard them called floats, cushions, bumpers, etc. Looks like whoever put the microfish together included it.
Perhaps its a spacer to take up air space in an attempt to reduce the brakefuid from going bad quickly?
I'm still trusting the Assembler at Honda, that it was packing material. I've found them hit or miss in wings, pacific coast's and ST1300's.
If they were needed, why wouldn't they be in the clutch master cylinder as well?

My Wing has one in both brake and clutch. Slosh prevention is what I was told.

I think it's there to simply 'float' and be an indicator to show if the level is low looking through the view glass.. the rear one doesn't have a view glass since you can see the level from looking at the white plastic reservoir.

How about a visual aid to let you know when your brake fluid is low? I'm thinking the white color will show up well in the sight glass when the fluid level is low.

Maybe it's there to just sit on the surface of the brake fluid to reduce it's exposure to any air that may be trapped between the diaphragm and the fluid so the fluid wont take on as much moisture maybe?

Thanks for all the replies. The diaphram and plastic cover are present. As others mentioned my concern was/is "if it's needed in this MC why not in the others". My other thought was it was packing material that wasn't removed, but it hasn't reacted to the brake fluid in 2 years. So I guess it's not styrofoam.

Thanks,

If it were packing material it would be listed as an item that should have been removed in the dealer setup instructions. I know that there is a copy of that floating around. I might even have it. I know I did look at it before but don't recall it being listed as a task.

Mellow posted the set up instructions from Wiki ST from early years to 08, and none of them make any mention of the mystery part.
If I recall correctly, my 04 GL1800 had one in the brake, but not in the clutch. I discard them and throw them away myself.

It's not packing material.

Per the setup instructions, the dealer simply checks the fluid level and nothing more. The brake and clutch fluid are filled during assembly. So the part is meant to be there. Is it on all bikes? Maybe, and maybe some dealers discard it as unnecessary. I agree it's unnecessary for the function of the brakes so if you have one in there, great, but if you don't, no big deal.

It's a float that minimizes the amount of brake fluid exposed to the air in the reservoir. 2008 and later models have it, 2007s and earlier don't.

Psssst, hey mister, wanna buy some floats?....I've got a drawer full of them :rofl1:
Blrfl's answer does make the most sense.
Maybe Honda puts them there to drive us crazy trying to figure out what they are for :think1:
