Had a timing belt go on the weekend, at the time I was sitting on 100kph (60mph). Any hints on what I might be up for? (before I take it to the shop). The bike is a 1990 ST1100.
cheers huffy

How many miles?

Unless you were really lucky yur looking at both heads rebuilt with new valves at the least. The 1100 is an interference engine.

Keep us poSTed.

Thanks for the reply George.
the bike has 110000 kms, the belt was changed at 90000kms as well as the water pump. Any idea how much for a head rebuild?
cheers Stuart

Hate to say it, Huffy, but shoud'a change the idler pulleys at the same time. You'll have to this time as one of those probably failed.

Gotta say, tho, 110,000 kms is usually not enuff to cause this problem. Many, many STs have passed well beyond 100,000 MILES without a failure. Not completely unheard of tho.

Can't even attempt a cost estimate, yur way too far away.

You could be lucky and find the failure didn't hurt any valves but I've never heard of anyone being that lucky.

Again many thanks for the reply.
I can get a second hand 2002 motor (54000kms) for the right money, but does not have carbs , alt, ect. I know the alternator is not the same, can this be put in a 1990 frame and will the carbs ect bolt on.
cheers stuart

All parts are interchangeable on the motor, it'll slot right in. Just did one this summer, 1995 to 1993 frame, everything fit fine.

I have another 95(?) motor setting in my garage awaiting application to my black 91.

If yur replacement donor motor has the 40 amp alternator already installed, that's a step up. good for you.

The older carbs will work fine.

Thanks George, no the donor motor does not come with an alternator, will the the 28amp fit?
cheers stuart

28 amp will fit, but you may want to locate a 40amp while changing out. Sure would be easier to do while the engine was out!
