Goldwing replaces the ST1300??

I'm fairly new here so forgive me if this has been asked. Watching a video last night of the new gold wing I noticed how much it has shrunk and seems to be looking more like the ST 1300. Was this Honda's plan all along? I always thought of the wing as an old man's bike but now that I'm almost 50 it's looking better and better to me! I actually like the way it's going.... anybody else care to chime in .
 
Officially, no it doesn't but, if it works for you then that's all that matters. I like the new look and the dct is supposed to be incredible.
 
The new GoldWing has lost some weight, still heavier than an ST1300.
It's not an old man's bike. Take one out for a test ride.
I think you'll be impressed with the comfort, power, and amenities.
They used to be programmed to stop at every Dairy Queen, however the new ones
will also find cobbler. :)

No way to ever know what Honda's plans were or are... they just do what they do, with no explanation. The new GW is much closer to the ST13 than it used to be, and some say the new GW is a better sport tourer than the ST13. It all depends on the rider... what you want, what you need and how you ride. Personally though, ignoring the cost factor, I'd take the new GW over the ST any day... even thought it's a little heavier, it's a much better bike in all aspects, from what I've read and heard.

I purchased a 2018 Wing DCT. It's a great bike. Heavier than my previously owned ST but, carries the weight lower. Therefore feels lighter, especially when trying to put on center stand.
Lots of nice features on the Wing though could use larger saddle bags, bigger tank would be nice and, wish the trunk would be easily detached for a sportier look. Oh yea, the GPS needs to be improved.

Just from watching the videos, so far I agree with everything you said......

Made the mistake;) of taking the Mrs. when I demoed the new GW. She was the driving factor in buying one. (wouldn't shut up about getting one) We call it her bike although her feet would be about a foot short of reaching the ground if she tried to ride it.

I personally think it is the replacement for the ST as well as the GW. The ST never was a real good seller and I don't see Honda throwing money at something that isn't selling.

We went for a ride this past weekend and saw several new wings and no STs, pretty much the same every time we go. This Wing does it all, except dirt, it doesn't do dirt.

I would like a little bigger boxes, but they would ruin the looks. The fuel range is not a problem for me as I need to stop more often than it does. Never had a different Wing but understand this one holds less fuel than previous model but gets better mileage so therefore has same range.

I know a lot of people aren't happy with the GPS, but I don't find it bad other than a little difficult to use and I wish it could be used while moving, however probably a good thing it can't. Definitely a learning curve for the GPS. Honda is continually updating it.

I recently got an ST1100... but I think I might see a used 2018 in a few years......
 
Someone in MD evidently thinks so, as the personalized license tag ST1800 is already taken.

Hee hee. Nice euphemism, or at least a nice way to put a positive spin on the situation.
 
Yeah, I'll chime in. I test rode both the Goldwing tour and Goldwing tour dct. I have a thread about my expirences on those machines. But to make a long story short when measured up against other bagger and touring bikes they shined. When measured up against the worlds best sport tourers they came up a little short.
 
Honda made some improvements to the GPS for the 2019 model year. I heard those improvements were a free retro-fit to the 2018 models as well?
 
I understand and appreciate that the new Gold Wing is quite a remarkable motorcycle that does many things very well, but when I look at the cost comparison between a new Gold Wing and a "creampuff" used ST 1100 or 1300, that stops me in my tracks. A "creampuff" ST 1100 or ST 1300 can be had for less than 20% of the cost of a new Gold Wing.

I'm not a miser - I'm probably the only owner on the forum to have ever bought a $100K 12-cylinder Volkswagen, new... but, after having had that vehicle for a number of years and enjoyed it quite a bit, I replaced it with a Golf. Does 90% of what the former did for 25% of the cost. :)

Completely agree.
As you state, there are loads of low mileage STs at incredible prices.
In fact, they (St1100/ST1300) represent one of the best bargains 'out there'.
 
I'll bet he was referring to more frequent gas stops! The prices on the previous generaton haven't dropped as fast as I hoped.
 
I owned a ‘06 ST1300 and a ‘08 Goldwing at the same time. They were completely different rides. When the 2018 Wings came out, I knew I wanted one. At my age, I decided this might be the last bike that I purchase, so I went for it. I sold the ST and the Wing and bought the 2018 Red DCT. Not once have I regretted it. To me, it feels lighter than the ST, with the center of gravity being so much lower. The acceleration and quick shifting of the DCT, doesn’t resemble the older Wing, but the long distance comfort is still there. To me, it’s the best of both bikes, rolled up into one. Supposedly, the 1/4 mile time is 12.8 seconds, hitting the 112 speed limiter before the end of the track. So, it’s not your grandfather’s Goldwing.

When I was looking to buy my ST in September, a dealer was selling one on consignment. He said that the owner had bought a 2018GW and it was going to replace the ST. When I went back to look at it again, a couple of week later, the owner had changed his mind and no longer wanted to sell it. I guess it doesn't quite replace the ST.
