I would like that in my car today..... my first car, a '59 VW had no such device.... it did have a gas heater though.

You got lucky. My 66 bug didn’t have a gas heater. Made sure my 70 bug did.

My two VW's....1970 Squareback and 1978 Bus came with A/C!!!!!
Only used it on the highway as with the a/c on, neither vehicle seemed to put more than 10 hp to the rear wheels. Might be a bit of an exaggeration but the loss of speed and acceleration was dramatic. I learned pretty quickly to use it only on really miserable-hot days.
