Interesting thread - I'm the one in say 100,000 that had one hip replacement infected over the first 3 months and work out in the long run after the American standard of a plastic temporary replacement with sulfa antibiotics embedded, iv antibiotics then after at least 6 weeks another long term implant. Then the other hip gets done and repeat the 3 step process on that one. Heard from surgeon that dental antibiotics were no longer recommended but he felt play it safe and use them. PITA the day of dental work and aching throughout the body the day after but like Phil I go with the advisement of a seasoned surgeon who saved my ass twice. Feeling lucky to be walking after each of those. Now I can jog but avoid it as regular exercise because of the pounding stress of the joint that goes with running.
My theory of the cause of infection, well it's a theory - something about my ability to dramatically increase blood sugar when I have the trauma of a bone sawed and drilled. I wake up l afterwards feeling a weird giddiness similar to when I used to drink the occasional sugar pop while out on a long ride or at a day long swap meet. Since I've learned to avoid sugar, and eventually even a drink of alcohol. Sleeping better and the hips have been working for 17 and 10 years. Always unhappy to hear someone else is having these same issues. I do know a guy unlucky to get a revision due to a hip recall. Can't say I wish that on anyone either. At least the infected implants just get loose and presumably slide out easily, like that means I was "lucky" in a small way.
