Man, how times have changed

If you don't plan routing, you can get away with what have you.
But for someone like me who plan custom routes over a rather large size of territory (150 - 250mi/day) with tens of shaping points and many different roads and turns, a good navigating device like Garmin Zumo or a phone/CarPlay/(kurviger) is essential for this.
At times of paper maps I had pages of directions with arrows and roads/streets names (something similar to Dakar racers just not rolled up) on my tank, in conjunction with paper maps. On occasions if lost I had to guess directions based on the sun (provided the sun is out).
Today it sounds like a nightmare in comparison with today's tools.
I wouldn't want to go back to that :)
AAA Triptics were awesome!!!

Heck I'm planning a trip to the UP next month and just stopped and picked up a AAA map the other day ;)
I have a good old Rand McNally atlas in one of the saddlebags on all of my ST1100s.
I always like to have spares and a backup plan just in case.
Electronics are great until they ain't - and the ain't part is usually when you need them to most! ;)

Why do you have a pic of The Woz on your phone?

I'm old enough to remember paper maps. I'm old enough to appreciate never needed one ever again.

I read the old iPhone 5 won’t connect to a network either. Not sure.
Modern iPhones contain radios for just about every frequency/network authorized for cellular use. Older phones like the 5 have limited radio/network connectivity. Some of these iPhones lacked some of the radio connectivity depending on what carrier the phone was purchased for.

The 5 will still connect to some networks. Notably it won't do 5G but given 5G's limited availability and short range connectivity that's not a big deal. The last iPhone that won't connect to any existing network is the 3GS.

Older phones that are lacking in features or performance and relegated to the kitchen catch-all drawer will still serve as iPods and have some functionality on WiFi.

Coming back to tracking:
Did anybody consider Zoleo's offering?
I habe been using it two weeks ago on my trip (>8.000km / 5000mi in 14days) to Scandinavia in combination with iPhone based SWT Tracker and Spotwalla to (i) track myself, (ii) document a SS1600K and (iii) provide (some) piece of mind for my wife.
A friend kept an eye on the tracking data and he said it worked well ...

The ones that I intend to run do it very nicely. ;)
Not that anyone ever has to work on newer machines ...
We love our 1100. I am becoming a bit concerned about the dearth of new parts available. The online part houses I use have a bothersome number of parts listed as 'NLA'. The exceptions are filters and 'tuneup' parts which are still available. Whenever I restored an old bike, I stockpiled spares of many parts I could foresee needing in the future (as if I'd own one forever). Did the same after I rebuilt the bike and still have them. I'll likely continue to ride the bike....to a point. I don't want a nice looking, inoperable bike in our garage.
Still have my little brother's ST1300. Likely I'll make it an antique as well at the appropriate time.

Did you get your 91 operating properly again (I recall you indicated you had an ignition coil issue)? I have the same concerns about parts, but I would assume parts like bearings and seals and the like would be available for quite a while more (even aftermarket). Not a huge fan or eBay used but if you’re desperate you’ll use them.

That's why I have 9 ST1100s ... ;)

Not yet. it's literally hotter than unowhere in the garage, even with the fan on. Seems to make little difference if I use the fan to blow105F air into the garage that's already 100F in there. Got the new coils and a few other just-in-case parts to check once the upper bodywork is removed.
Still riding the 1300 around early to mid-mornings so life isn't as depressing as it could be.
I'll get back to work once our hellmouth closes and get it running. Then determine if I really want to keep it. I'm in my 'I think I'll keep it' phase right now.

It’s been pretty hot and humid by me as well- haven’t been on the bike in nearly 2 weeks. The 7 AM temp is already near 80 degrees but next week it should be low 70’s to start the day. As for selling the 91, if you like it, I would likely just fix it and ride it- unfortunately these aren’t worth too much these days so for me, I guess the only reason to sell any of them is if I was going to give up riding, and I’m not dead yet.
