At times of paper maps I had pages of directions with arrows and roads/streets names (something similar to Dakar racers just not rolled up) on my tank, in conjunction with paper maps. On occasions if lost I had to guess directions based on the sun (provided the sun is out).
Today it sounds like a nightmare in comparison with today's tools.
I wouldn't want to go back to that :)

I have a good old Rand McNally atlas in one of the saddlebags on all of my ST1100s.
I always like to have spares and a backup plan just in case.
Electronics are great until they ain't - and the ain't part is usually when you need them to most! ;)
