Anyone a lighthouse enthusiast?

Some mighty impressive structures there.

Here's an old one (from around 1843) on the South Coast of NSW, on the south head of Twofold Bay. Privately built by a guy named Benjamin Boyd to assist his fleet of boats and ship navigating into Twofold Bay. The story went that he didn't get government approval to build it, the government wouldn't allow him to use it, it was never used.

They even built a replica at Boydtown.

Boydtown is now a tourist destination.

Daboo posted the Heceta Head lighthouse earlier, here's a wider angle view of its location on the Oregon Coast.
That's a gorgeous view. I can see how visiting lighthouses can be a great pastime. I was impressed by the Point Reyes visit but was a little put off by the hike and the heavy winds.

I found a few of my pix over the years. I can't find my Quoddy Lighthouse in far far down East Maine pic.

Would've thought that they'd build it on the top of the hill. Something like this ....

very clever use of photoshop, and got me to thinking, is there any advantage to locating a lighthouse that high above the water level?

the following thoughts occurred to me:

1. There's a limit to how far the light can travel, so as long as the lighthouse is high enough to cover the curvature of the Earth over that distance, there's no advantage to being any higher.
2. its possible that placing it higher could put it in low clouds while the air is relatively clear at water level.
3. when boats get close enough that its really critical, if the beam is located too high up from the water level it will probably be harder to see, not easier because its off the line-of-sight axis from the boat to the shore.

In May of 2014, Chris and I went to Hawaii (a bucket list we had when we first got married in 1974) for her birthday & our anniversary.

We came across these:
