Replacing steering stem bearing ST1100

Just a heads up when using tapered bearings, they require a lower torque on the bolt. It’s more of a feel. If they are too right you will experience a low speed wallow.
I read you right the first time, "tight" and not "right"... You mean attracted with too much torque so it becomes too tight.
 
Buying tapered Steering Head Bearings with seals for my ST1100 -99, have always liked SKF bearings but can't find them. What about "ALL BALLS" sold in local stores here or "NTN" on eBay, anything negative about either of those?

However, please share your experience of installation and fitment... 🤔
Especially if there any issues with the height, thus the top nut won't grab/have sufficient threads, or the steering limiters and the steering lock pin still engaging/functioning with them installed...
Which was the issue I faced on a CX500 EuroSport who's owner unfortunately insisted on those dreaded tapered head bearings... in the end I had to mix parts from three(!) of those kits
to finally have enough threads on the steering tube, plus get that steering lock working again, and still had to bend/hammer the limiter warts on the frame head so the handlebar wouldn't ding the tank... :o-o:
(just in case you wonder about the reasons I'm slightly biased about those... :cautious:)
 
I've read countless posts in this thread about steering head bearings, whether to choose the original ball bearings or tapered roller bearings, and which manufacturer is the best. As I've mentioned before, I generally prefer SKF or genuine bearings from a well-known manufacturer.

When I specifically asked about tapered roller bearings and recommended brands, people suggested All Balls, and I was also advised to buy a complete kit that was available on ex eBay.

Instead, I bought a complete kit locally here in Norway for NOK 549, which included two bearings and two seals. Unfortunately, it turns out that was the wrong kit …

So, what is actually recommended? I'd really appreciate advice based on experience, as this isn't an area where I want to be a guinea pig.
 
I have the All Balls in both STs- so far, no issues. It’s a pig of a job to do, but I did them maybe 2-3 years ago. Nice and smooth. My old races weren’t horrible but I could see the bearing marks on the race surface (like a light mark, visible but not palpable). To get the new ones in, I inverted the old race and tapped in the new one using the old one as a same sized template. To get the old one off the steering shaft, I used a Dremel and made a diagonal cut on the race to free it, then used it inverted to help tap the new one in place. I would say that the part of the job that took the longest was getting the bottom race out of the steering head and you need a tool with a slight hook at the bottom. I actually wound up using a prybar that I bought from Lowe’s. I had a very mild curved hook at the bottom and it was good enough that it would grab the edge of the race so I was able to tap it out. Take your time and all will go well. I also used a lot of padding to hold the handlebars up against the dash and windshield as well as some bungee cords to hold the handlebars in place. I also had never done the job before, but once I did the first one, the second one was really straightforward. It’s just a lot of disassembly and reassembly. For me, I had each bike apart in the garage for a couple of days because I was really taking my time doing it. When you tighten the nut once everything was reassembled, I used 20 foot pounds of torque, loosened the retaining nut, then went just a little bit past hand tight because with taper bearings, you don’t need a substantial amount of torque because the bearings were us wedged themselves in place. Once you ride, you may realize the bearings are maybe a hair loose and then, although it’s a pain, do serial tightenings maybe an eighth turn by an eighth turn. With the 94, I have a suspicion they weren’t properly torqued originally because the bottom race may not have been fully seated, but then once the bike was used a few times, I was able to feel a little bit of a clunk in the front end, but now that that bike has been tightened properly, the clunk is completely gone. I did not experience that with the 2000 and did not have to re-torque the bearings. My 94 now has near 60,000 miles on it and the 2000, about 55,000 miles so I suspect I will likely never do them in my ownership of these motorcycles in the future. I only put about maybe 4000 miles per bike per year so it’s going to take a very long time to wear out these bearings.

One more thing, a lot of people will recommend putting the steering head in the freezer overnight and I have a garage freezer, and I did this. The thought is you may be able to shrink the metal just a hair in order to take off the lower race more easily. For the record, that did not work for me. so cutting it became my best option. You have already done quite a bit of work on your ST so I have zero doubt that you can do this easily.

All joking aside, I do remember using some Motion Pro tools to do the job as well. One was actually a bearing driver and one was a race remover. I had trouble driving in the race on the bottom of the steering head, so that’s why I use the inverted old race to tap it in and settle it to bottom it out. also, I have that special nut wrench for the steering head nut. You clearly did have better tools than I did when I did the job.

ha, my thoughts exactly. I looked like a cave man in comparison.

regarding your earlier comment about driving out the bottom race from the frame tube, I think there is a loaner tool for that somewhere, but I don't know if the loaner program ships internationally (Norway).

At the time I did mine (1998) I just used a 24" threaded rod and bent the end of it in a vise to give it a little curl at the tip so it could go around that little flare at the bottom of the tube. It was a bit of work, but it eventually drove it out.

Also used the Dremel to cut the bottom bearing from the steering stem, and I seem to remember using PVC pipe with a cut along the side with a table saw to allow it to expand enough to be used as a driver to pound the new bearing on.

No doubt that an old, big-a§§ flat screwdriver or even a piece of rebar will do... BTDT... hated it... ;)

Since I'm doing my wheel bearings as well, am not my own 'personal enemy' thus collecting proper motorcycle tools since '92 (no one buys all and everything at once... 🤔), I got me one of those nifty, large pin-drivers (whist binning that black plastic something it came with right away):


Just another, rather inexpensive item turning the task at hand into a breeze...
 
Don't underestimate special tools! With the right tools, all repairs are carried out without problems, otherwise it often becomes a struggle where most of the time is spent on temporary solutions where the hours are often doubled.

Not to mention the possible damages to (expensive) parts caused by improper tooling/procedures... :confused:
