2016 Honda ST1300P
I buy and sell old cop cars and came across this bike last week and bought it. The agency says it runs and rides as it should (Only 11k miles should have mentioned) and needs a battery. Grabbing a battery at Wally World.... I am wanting to do all the fluids and basic maintenance, plugs, whatever else y'all would suggest for a new owner insepection/service?

As mentioned, I am a new and first time owner of an ST... I have had MANY bikes and have looked for an ST for a long time, tried twice in the past year to land one, third time is a charm, so I am stoked to finally get to throw a leg over.

I tried to go pick it up today xmas eve, but no joy, brilliant weather in the south too, sunny and 70.... but have to wait till Monday.

Thanks for any pointers... post better pics on Monday....

I dont know if they removed anything, sometimes yes sometimes wysiwyg so not sure how I will get it...looks very clean to me : )

Another frequent issue w/ P bikes is the decommissioning process. Some new owners have found that removal of radios, lights, etc. was done by grabbing the wiring harness and cutting through wires wholesale. When you remove the plastic down low (covering the tip over guards) you will be able to tell if the bike was dropped a number of times. The plastic does not protect the steel pipe beneath except for static drops.

Thanks, I read through it and found a link to the factory maintenance schedule... I am going to do the 16k service.

I have bought a couple of P bikes in the past....100% on the clutch.... I have replaced a clutch on an R1200RTP (bike had 6k miles and it was SMOKED) so worse case, I can do it if I have too.... I have not had issues with wiring knock on wood, last two came with everything working and I took the code equipment off myself. I will probably do some graphics with reflective tape...I am betting its pretty clean based on what I can see, the miles and the agency told me it was running riding minus dead battery

Looks pretty clean! I love the all white ones. Only thing I noticed from the pictures is the left plastic tip over bar cover is missing. I assume it has been dropped on the left side?

Interesting that they sell it to you with all the gear still on. Seems like that is a huge plus as you can remove the wiring carefully, and I assume it has the additional relays already installed in the rear cowling.

Definitely would inspect the SMC (but I would say that for any ST1300), and I would watch the clutch as you already assumed.

Let us know how it turns out!
Ryan

Also, looking at the pic, is there something missing from the fairing as well just up and behind the tip over cover toward the back of the bike????

I think the crash bars would catch the bike before the tip over bar would hit??? Its also common to strip parts from one unit for another...I dont see any other telltale signs of a drop??? On my RTP the crash bar won't let any part the bike strike the ground

Its def one of the cleanest ST's I have seen at auction...

Last two I bought had all the lights/sirens.... and yes I STRONGLY prefer to decommission myself if I have the choice, including the stickers. They stated they removed the stickers, very common to at least remove the towns/city/county name and police and 911 stickers. Wont be surprised if the lights/siren are still affixed ....

Oh look, the Govdeals Auburn bike I passed on cause I couldn't get ahold of someone there so I could inspect it. SD1 how mechanical are you to do the full inspection with the covers off yourself??

What year is the bike?
Did it come from Maine or California?
It's a 2016 from BAMA.

Yes, you are missing a little plastic piece - inspection cover - in the left middle cowl. I'm not sure if these are still available, they were a while ago. There used to be a thread about fastening these to the bike more stoutly than Honda did. A number of guys looked down to find this piece had fallen off.

IIRC, the left inspection cover gave one access to the radiator overflow coolant tank, but I don't see it in this picture. Is my memory deteriorating (well, sure it is, but I do remember thinking said trap door was nearly useless for its intended purpose).

@SMSW I found that piece, but I think from responses (@Ryan_B ) there are two parts that fit in that space????? I will def look up the upgraded fastener (screw) when I replace it. Thanks for the help!

@aniwack they were incommunicado with me until yesterday. Pretty typical. I am able to complete any mechanical task on the bike as needed. If you passed on this one, you probably arent going to find one to your liking on GD....

Your bike has the black wind deflectors that was an accessory. These are no longer made and the last guy who posted some for sale that I saw was asking a price that made my eyebrows head north. The wind deflector kit included a piece that attached to the fairing 'door'. This wind deflector part maintained the inboard and outside edge continuity when affixed to the door. There was some talk of 3D printing this part. I'd imagine you would have to find someone willing to lend you the W D part, scan it with a laser to create a mathematical model, then save the file in the appropriate format and feed it to a 3D printer.

My only exposure to that laser scanner was at a university lab where a student was scanning a hip bone. His group was designing a new and improved hip joint. The laser hardware looked expensive and no doubt required a learning curve.

@SMSW I will have to put my eyes on it to decide how much trouble it will be to get the part, (@Ryan_B) said as much, that there was one of the three parts missing that was hard to get, but I am inclined to get it...Its a challenge for me, the more complete, clean and mechanically sound it is, the more I enjoy it.... if the bike is clean and runs well, I will go out of my way to make it 100%...famous last words... : )

I've got three sitting in my shop. I needed more info as to why certain things are on the bike before jumping on another overhaul.

I've got most parts if you find yourself in need.

I bought a retired Pittsburgh Police FLHTPi in 2010 for peanuts. Everyone told me it would be a disaster (flogged, bad wiring, crashed, etc.). Turned out to be one of the best bikes I've owned. I put about 60K on it trouble free, sold it to a buddy so I could buy a Heritage Softail. He's still riding it, it's well over 100K now (twin-cam 103). I would think a Honda would probably hold up at least as well as an FLHTP.

@Deputy25 I agree, this will be my 4th P bike, granted the other 3 were BMW's, they all had something, 2 fuel pumps and a clutch, varying cosmetic conditions, brakes, fluid, tires, just same old stuff anyone has to deal with owning any kind of bike.

Seriously guys act like it was a prop on a mission impossible film....

I could care less to be honest, if it all it needs is a clutch it will be a huge winner.... Keep the negativity to yourself for real.... but mostly positive interaction and always people who step up and give solid advice and links.... that stuff is HUGELY appreciated and why I spend time on forums....

I watch the RTP's FLHTP and ST's and would be happy to throw a leg over any of the three....anything with two wheels and a motor is a good time....

@aniwack How many engine overhauls have you done on ST motors?

thanks for the offer for parts, but I hope you are able to maintain your inventory :)
