So I have a service manual now, this will make me dangerous, lol! Coincidentally I had stopped some specific work until I got one- and now I see that the part I needed help with is called the ABS Control Unit. Now why would a non abs bike even have a abs cu?!
Oh wait this same part is called the ECU in another chapter, so if it’s the ecu, why call it an abs cu, anywhere else, 😳period. When I first read abs cu I thought I don’t need that, don’t have abs so, less weight! 🤣
Now, I don’t know if this bike has abs or not.
Pretty sure it doesn’t, rims don’t have those “toothed” center patterns, which I had settled on- in determining if an st had abs or not-
Please show me the way!
I think what the book meant to say is the cu for abs is internal to the ECU(unless I am wrong again), on abs bikes
See how I can get dangerous, I expect oem manuals to be pretty specific.

If there is still any question, on the right side of the bike, just behind the front fork and about 4" above the axle Honda put the magnetic sensor that 'reads' wheel speed via that toothed ring that is not there. Its location is on page 1-32.

My '03 to '11 manual also calls the ECU the ABS control unit like yours.

The Abs unit controls the braking system, repeatedly reducing an reapplying brake pressure if the brake is applied and the wheel stops turning when traveling forward above a certain speed.

The ECM is the engine management system which takes data from sensors and adjusts fuel, advance/retard and such like to keep the engine running sweetly.

Mine had both, and had two control units in the rear.

Two different things that are located in the same place as John wrote, one stacked on top of the other. If you don't have ABS you will only have one box (The ECM) in the tail section. Easy to check, just lift the passenger seat off and have a look back there.

Thanks for ALL the responses, so I was wrong, what I am hearing and what the book is pointing to…is there ARE 2 different physical cu’s; 1 for abs, and one for engine mgt. So I have the 1 physical cu which everything has-ECU, if the bike had abs then there would be a second similar black box, for the abs.
Thanks again, that’s where my gap was, I do understand what each does, I didn’t understand the physical landscape of what I was looking at. It would if made more sense if a 2nd box was there but it wasn’t, I got lost.
Don’t worry…. I am sure I am not done with needing simplistic advice, yes the girl is new to me and it is becoming quite a sweet affair!
