Best oil to use

This is the only oil I'm interested in at the moment.

Good to see it's dropping in price again - but most likely only for a short time...

I'll answer.

For my 1100, I'd go to Halfords and get their Castrol Power 1 4T 10w40. It's a semi synth, meets the specs and was always excellent in my 1100s. Not knowing much about oils I just wanted one that would work for wet clutches, met the Honda spec, and which I could buy off the shelf just by popping down the road - and was a known brand. I had two 1100s over 7 years and 90,000 miles. No issues at all (and the engine was still running perfectly when I sold them)

Can I have some popcorn now please?

First, you have a great bike and it is good to see you're trying to do your own maintenance.

Once you spend some time on Internet motorcycle forums, you'll find one of the most frequent questions asked is "What Oil Should I Use?". It generates lots of forum activity during those long winter months when many riders are stuck riding a keyboard instead of a motorcycle.

Any reputable brand that has a JASO MA/MA2 certification listed (meaning good for wet clutches).
I'd qualify his wording to say to look for the words JASO MA/MA2 on the bottle. There's also endless forum posts about whether Shell Rotella T6 is good for your bike, or not. It doesn't have the certification label on the bottle, just the wording along with a slew of other certifications.

Many years ago and motorcycles ago, the "expurts" on a different forum were recommending Shell Rotella T6. (It has the JASO MA/MA2 wording on the bottle, btw.) I ended up switching to that and had no issues with that motorcycle. Or the next one. Or the one after that. Or the latest couple bikes. I'm not going to spend a lot of time researching the latest info on oil simply because if it works, why change?

One thing I have learned is that if anything says "motorcycle" on the label...it'll cost about 4X what it would if it didn't say that. So I'd stick with looking for the JASO wording and you'll be fine.

Dreggie, it's not personal, but an oil thread will end up 200 posts long with no conclusion.
Put this in and forget about it. Mine ran on it for about 50,000 miles. No issues.
Good luck.

Dreggie ,

From your post count, you are new-ish here. Like Upt' North said - it's nothing personal. You just happened upon the running joke everyone uses and laughs about....

This is one of the friendliest and most helpful sites you can find. Please hang around. You will learn probably more than you ever wanted to know about STs.

And look for a new "what's the best tire / tyre" thread too.

There's one currently, but it's been running for a couple of weeks now, so it's getting stale.

Which color ST is the fastest and most reliable...?

@W0QNX has around 400K miles on one of his bikes using just Rotella T6, this fact being far more valuable than anyone’s opinion.

According to Shell only two grades of Rotella T6 meet JASO MA/MA2 requirements, those grades are 5W40 and 15W40. The other grades may cause clutch problems.

Some folks do tend to put THE EXACT amount of energy into telling someone to use the search function rather than LESS energy just telling them what they prefer...

I usually delete those replies... but that takes even more energy and I'm trying to reduce my carbon footprint.

Just don't use Wesson!!!

Ok, I'll have a look. It appears my quite innocent question has cased raised eyes. Ill'not bother again.
As mentioned earlier, you just haven't been around for an oil thread yet, the ones that gave guidance above are saving you from 100s of useless comments about oil. @Upt' North is right on, I have a 1300 and use mostly what's available, or Valvoline blue.

We may seem cheeky but it's all in good fun, stick around, ask questions, this is the best place on the internet for ST related info. We are all glad you're here and will help with what ails ya.

@Mellow if you don't have anything to do...lol maybe have a separate oil forum.

Looking for peoples views on the best oil to use for my 2000, 31,000 mile 1100. UK based. Thank you in advance.
Welcome to the board. Please stick around and post some more. You'll find most here have a big bark but little bite.

And on the oil, I like mine as fresh as possible. Here I am getting it right from the spigot once.
