That's what a ST1100 failing fuel pump does.
It will be fine for a while then quit.
You remove the cutoff to eliminate it from the mix.

In my experience (and I've had a few fail), mileage makes no real difference.
I've had them fail at less than 40,000 miles and past 140,000 miles.
I carry a spare fuel pump setup when I go on long trips - so far I've never had to use it.
I replaced mine with an internal Quantum pump and fuel pressure regulator when they go south.

where do you get the regulator from because I was doing some research and couldn't seem to find them for sale, but I might not have been looking in the right place. I saw the quantum fuel pumps

I have talked with Quantum and explained to them that their ST1100 'speced' fuel pump puts out too much pressure.
It fits fine in the stalk but you only need 1.5-2 psi otherwise you will overflow the floats.
The original ST1100 pump has a 'regulator' built in and some guys have 'retroed' it to an aftermarket pump.

It can be fitted with an inexpensive aftermarket pump, external or internal with I prefer. Just has to be a low pressure pump.
