Coldest Ride, 2019-2020 Winter

It is very likely that I'm not going to be in the top 10, or even the top 20 or 30, until temps stay cold all day. I mean cold as in below 20-25 deg F or lower. Reason is that since I retired there is no more early morning commute and I just don't ever get out in the early mornings any more (I like to sleep in ). And I'm not one to just go out when it's cold just to get on this list. Even so, I likely won't be setting any personal records for riding in cold temps anyway since getting older makes it much more difficult to stay comfortable. I'll still be out there every month of the year. At least I'll be trying to do so.

They did say it's an honor post and there's no prize, so I think it's fair if you get up and go out for a ride, with the thought had you not slept in you'd have gone for the ride regardless of the temperature - it's fair game. A motorcycle version of a Mulligan if you will

Yeah, I know it's still warm for most of us (it's still stupid hot here in Dallas at the end of September), but Montana just got a load of snow and it reminded me of this little game of ours. Like last year, just post the lowest temp you've ridden in for more than 15 miles (new requirement, figured I'd add a little more rigor to the game) for the 2019-2020 winter. Extra details would be nice, but not required, i.e. gear worn, where you went, etc. We're on the Honor system, so no windchill, no handicap and no participation trophies! Don't hesitate to correct me if I miss someone or make a mistake. I'll update this first post with the names and temps of the top 10, as they are generated.

34 was the lowest actual temp. on a LONG trip from just ended Kansas to Cape North, NS in Canada via Spartanburg, SC for rider traiing at BMW - 97 degrees all day 2 days - then Boston area, started at 34. Most mornings in Canada 36, warming to 45. Dainese fabric jacket with full liner, 2 layers under, nothing heated. Coldest feeling was last 2 days returning through TN and MO with 30 - 40 mph cross winds and low 50s. (maybe psychological that it was over)

well shoot had a 42 this morning and it still doesn't make the top 10. That's ok I'll still be riding in Jan and Feb and will make my mark then lol

No, not getting soft but getting older.

And if I happen to be awake earlier in the morning and decide to go for a ride I will... regardless what the temp is. What I was saying is that it's not about riding for the purpose of reporting a low temp but rather just riding, and if the temp happens to be low enough to report then I will report it.

I ride to ride, I don't ride to get a temp reading.
(of course if I am just itching to see what the temp sign at the bank says I just might hop on the scoot and go for a ride to find out)

39 degrees on my ride to work this morning. Regular riding gear, but I did fire up the heated grips. Beautiful day in NW Missouri!

25 - 28 degrees on my 25 mile ride to work today. I plugged the heated gloves in yesterday. They keep my hands warmer than the heated grips. Much as I enjoy this FJR, the ST1300 does have better weather protection on a cold day.

Just to pop back up on the top 10, I had 27 on the ST display during my 25 mile commute this morning.

Still going with stage 1 winter gear but I did turn on the Oxford heated grips, which I think are stupid BTW. What good is it to have my palms warm when it's my fingers that get cold? Are we supposed to put on chain-mail gloves to transfer the heat? (yes, I know it helps the fingers some but still...stupid). I'm more comfortable with just a well insulated set of Klim gloves to about 10F and then add heated liners for below 10.

I had 40F to start my commute yesterday (10/29). They were telling us it's going below that, but now I don't see it.

The weather guessers are doing a great job...at guessing!

I saw 30° on my 27 mile commute this morning... 30 when I left home and 30 when I got to work. Pretty cold for this Texas boy, although it's a nice respite from the heat, at least for a little while.

My left Gerbing T-5 heated glove has decided to quite working. It quit on me in some very heavy rain during the Niitwit rally this past weekend. I ohmed it out and it appears to be a break somewhere in the microwire in the glove, not the connector. I think I'm going to send it for repair. I'm also going to purchase another pair of heated gloves that are much more waterproof... these Gerbing's get wet as a sponge, through and through, after about an hour of good rain. I rode pretty much the entire rally with soaking wet/cold hands. A guy named Ken Phenix retrofits gloves to make them electric. His flagship is the Olympia Weatherking that he adds 20 watts of heat to. There are very few choices of heated gloves with a Gore-Tex liner, so I'm going with his offering.

Thanks Steve, I seriously considered those since I have the WnS jacket and controller, but I really want a Gore-Tex glove and I'm not trying to save any $$ here... I'm willing to pay the freight for the Gore-Tex.

The WnS tour gloves are GoreTex, or at least were... I have apair. Lifetime warranty on the electrical (for original purchaser). Had to send one back so far and they promptly swapped it out.

Thanks for the input T_C, I do like the customer service of WnS, but according to their website, the WnS gloves use Porelle® Breathable, "Waterproof" Membrane.

So I saw it go down to 37F this morning! I had put my electric gloves on, so I was plenty toasty!
