Re: Fuel Cut Eliminator for ST - On-Off Throttle Issue Resolved

Installed the FCE over the weekend and so far impressed with the results. Throttle reponse seems smoother. No more unexpected acceleration when hitting a bump at speed. Just seems to give me a better feel/control of the throttle in slow speed maneuvering. I will keep an eye on the effect on fuel consumption but so far it seems that it may be slightly improving my mpg. I also crimped and soldered the connections.

FCE - So far well worth the cost.

Re: Fuel Cut Eliminator for ST - On-Off Throttle Issue Resolved

I finally got the time I needed to perform a proper install of the FCE today. I too crimped and soldered the connections to make sure they were really solid. The whole procedure took me about 5hrs, but like I said I really took my time and agonized over every detail to make sure I wouldn't have to get back in there to do it again.

I installed the TT FPR in the spring and didn't want to remove it today so left that in place. I also have the G1 throttle tamer installed.

The slow speed handling with the FCE is noticeably smoother. But best of all for me is that abrupt throttle response in the 3500 rpm range is gone. I took the ST out on the freeway and just went up and down the speed range in various gears trying to get it to stumble like it always did and the good news is that it didn't! It was smooth all over.

I'm planning on taking some extended rides up in the mountains later this week and will be able to see how it runs at altitude and on roads that I am intimately familiar with. Can't wait.

So far I would say this is a worthwhile mod to make. I'm glad it's in there. Now this already great ST is that much nicer. Not sure why Honda didn't fix this annoyance ages ago. They're certainly technically capable to do so.

Re: Fuel Cut Eliminator for ST - On-Off Throttle Issue Resolved

Seen some comments in this post reguarding the effect on felt heat.

I've always believed that the heat issues on ST's were something to do with the running condition of the bike. Maybe this would help.

Would like to hear any comments about the before and after effect on felt heat.

Thanks.

I haven't felt any difference at all.. it's just as hot as it was before... I never felt it was too hot, just warm-to-hot based on ambient temps....

I feel a sync might be more of a cure...

I did have a chance to finally get some 15-30 mph curves in this past week and can tell you the FCE made a huge difference in how smoothly I did those curves.... they felt just as smooth as 50+ sweepers with no bucking w/throttle movement... a big A+ in my mind.

The heat issue is much better for me. Now having extensive riding in 95+ degree temperatures I find that the air coming out of the cooling ducts is cooler and much more tolerable. Before I thought I was going to get a first degree burn on my legs. However the gas tank still gets hot in traffic - just like before.

Re: Fuel Cut Eliminator for ST - On-Off Throttle Issue Resolved

I have read through all the comments this add-on and it sounds like just what I have been looking for.

Like a few others I too am a little "unsure" of myself regarding the installation, especially when it comes to cutting critical wires. Crimping and splicing requires practice and it is not something I do that often.

So here is what I think I am going to try. Instead of cutting and crimping the wires in the ECU and harness, I am going to make "pig-tails". On one end I will crimp the male and female connectors supplied by Ivan. On the other end, I am going to use a posi-lock connector.

I figure I would then cut and strip the wires on the ECU and harness and then use the posi-lock connectors with the pig-tails for the connection to the device.

Since I have not actually gotten in there yet I may be all wet here but the instructions seem to stress getting it positioned so it will fit.

It seems to me, given the length of the leads coming out of the FCE, there is plenty of room. I am just judging this on what it looks like when I take the seat off.

Re: Fuel Cut Eliminator for ST - On-Off Throttle Issue Resolved

Can anyone tell me which wires need to be cut/spliced to install this thing?

Post #76 has some good pics.

I asked that in post #87 - I suggested I might be able to find more accessible places to cut the wires if the instructions were posted. No response over 100 posts later!

Hello Hound,
If you will PM me your email addy I'll scan the instructions and send them.

Will do, Willy. Thank you! :)

Re: Fuel Cut Eliminator for ST - On-Off Throttle Issue Resolved

To those who have this device installed, and occasionally ride through the 4500 to 5500 foot elevation range: Does it help with the abrupt throttle and 100% dead spot at altitude?

The effect is best felt descending grades rolling through sharp downhill corners at idle. Large hesitation and then an abrupt "on" when adding power coming out of them.

Also - anyone know if this mod disables the bank angle fuel cut safety?

Was riding in the Custer State Park area last week but that's only in the 4200 foot level but the bike worked quite well w/FCE. I was able to stay in the 1st-2nd gear in some of the 15-20 mph curves and it was very smooth... a huge improvement.

I'll be heading to Colorado next month so will be able to report on higher elevations then.

I'm pretty sure this and the bank angle sensor are not interfering with each other.

Re: Fuel Cut Eliminator for ST - On-Off Throttle Issue Resolved

I'll be riding up in Rocky Mt Nat'l Park today up & over Trail Ridge Road which is just over 12K so I'll report on how the FCE works in that scenario.:biker:

Re: Fuel Cut Eliminator for ST - On-Off Throttle Issue Resolved

Out of the six wires from the ECU that are tapped into by the FCE, four are for the O2 sensors, and the other two go to the clutch switch, clutch diode, sidestand switch and starter relay switch. I can't see any way that would interfere with the bank angle sensor.

My understanding is it taps into the throttle position sensor, and fuel cut relay. Basically trimming the voltage the ECU sees for throttle position so it never sees "fully closed" and it bypasses the relay so fuel is always flowing.

It does tap into the O2 sensors.. It is basically an O2 simulator. The other connections are for power and ground. In my knowledge, the DCFO is a program function that can not be altered thru the O2 sensors.

Thanks Tom

Re: Fuel Cut Eliminator for ST - On-Off Throttle Issue Resolved

DCFO ?

Also - seems there may be different versions of it. Some photos show 4 wires, some literature talks of 5 wires, and now people are saying 6 wires. Photo from Ivan's web site shows 5 wire pairs:

Deceleration fuel cut off (DFCO)

I have installed a unit here and it is 6 wires.
That picture shows 7 wires?

Thanks Tom

I'm counting 8. Four male and four female ends. Has to be an even number right?
