Yesterday morning, in the predawn darkness, I went out for my 3-mile run. My left foot caught a slight rise on the pavement, and down I went. Hard. I put my arms out to save my head, and my hands paid the price. It was brutal.

Lost skin on the right arm, and the right hand is swollen.

Lost skin on the top of the left hand, and three swollen fingers. Both hands are sore and stiff, and I'm unable to do much. Don't think anything is broken. I still move them, and no funny bends.

I have a sore right rib; I can get up and down, but it's painful. If it were broken, I'd know it = immobile.

Throughout my years of playing football, firefighting, and riding, I have never been injured. I've just turned 70, so this is new to me.

Noway I can ride right now, and it already bothers me. I had a planned trip up the East Coast and home via the Blue Ridge, but now I'm unsure. I've been riding since I was 14 and have never been on injured reserve. Being unable to ride is bothering me, and it's only been 36 hours.

there's your problem, no experience.

How did you get to age 70 with that clean a record?

I hope your injuries clear up in time to go on your planned ride, and stop running, that's obviously no good for your health. :rofl1:

You really must have been cooking along to have lost that much skin. A cracked rib will be painful for a few weeks. Broken can puncture a lung, cracked is just painful. Hope you heal quickly. In the future you might consider ATGATT. You will get the same workout by the end of your driveway that you do over 3 miles.

I would suggest that you get your hands/wrists x-rayed and evaluated. There can be damage there even though you seem to have mobility. Early detection of an issue will go a long way toward preventing issues down the road. Hands and wrists are handy when it comes to riding.

Some of it was luck; I got away with a few things when learning. I took calculated risks in my career, when necessary, but mostly I weighed the consequences before taking action. Like I don't pick up anything heavy; I leave it or ask for help. That has kept my back good.

But my hands are swollen right now, but this sore rib or muscle hurts if I bend. Can't sleep in my bed. I don't see how Uncle Phil rode back from Alaska with bad ribs

Can't sleep in my bed
I broke nine (9) ribs all on the same side and all at the same time. I couldn't sleep either. I was lying with the broken ribs facing up thinking it wasn't a good idea to put my weight on them. Then I realized it hurt less if I actually lied on the broken ribs and I slept better. Seems counter-intuitive but lying on them worked for me. Give it a try.

Nine??

Yes, starting from the bottom and going nine ribs up the cage, numbers three through twelve.
I can tell you from experience that it brought a whole new meaning to taking your breath away. After I regained consciousness I almost passed out again before I finally caught my breath.

Well, there was really no other option but to suck it up and get back in the saddle ... ;)
