Installed New Honda 12V Power Outlet

Well alot of the folks here are more experienced then I in the electrical area for sure.

So I searched here and it seems the consensus was to go with a powerlet plug. Just installed it in the right side on Saturday. Also got cigar and tender jr adapters.

Went the cheap route for a compressor, walmart Holman Caulfield (sp?), all of 10 bucks. And smaller then they use to be! (Have an earlier model for the car).

Here's a pic of the powerlet. I'm proud of that job :) Hopefully it wont get wet in downpours? The fuse is 15amp, and the new compressor says it needs 15 amp where the older ones use to use 8? All I know for sure is it works! yeehaww!

hope u get yer probs resolved finewest, regards,

It looks great HankSTer! Wonderful! So simple, elegant, cheap and easy to install! Can't ask for more! I'm going to do just that also! Should of done it that way in the first place. :(:

Thanks finewest :) appreciate that! If you diy, check out this thread:

CrazyKz did us all a favor with measurements etc. I also second the idea of using a stepped drill bit, it went thru the plastic very nicely, no prob with too high speed and melting plastic, dont ask

I got the st1300 powerlet kit, for the right side, made things quite easy.

regards and best wishes with it,

Just got back in from the dealer having the Honda 12V power outlet installed in the right fairing pocket. Haven't tried it out yet, but it looks cool! Almost as cool as my my new TC rack!

Question: How in the hell do you keep the fairing pocket closed when you have something plugged into it? Like a GPS power cord for example? The mechanic suggested cutting a small channel out of the pocket lid, but I don't really want to do that!

I just bought two 12 volt outlets at Radio Shack for about $8 a piece. I put on under the seat to use for the air compressor if needed and I ran one up along the cables along the side of the handlebars and zip tied it there. I did put some nice black coil cover over the wiring so it doesn't look bad. I can use this one for radar detector etc. This is simple and cheap way around some of these woes. I did have the compartment 12 volt outlet on a wing once and found it inconvenient for the same reasons you are having.

that is great HankSTer, but... I am going to have it placed on the left side fairing. Anybody got a left side fairing install guide? Or better yet, anybody local to me willing to do it for a few bucks, a 12 pack of beer and a Chatty Cathy?

Ok, took the bike back to the mechanic this morning and sure enuff; a blown fuse! So you got it right! A stinkin' blown 2A fuse! Geez Honda, what were you thinking!? So... the mechanic put in a 5A fuse and it seems to be working just fine. Charging the phone, running the air compressor. I'm still going to install the Powerlet I order yesterday. Thanks for all your help guys! This is a great forum! It should come with the bike like the Honda Club membership!

I want to add to the previous post. The mechanic installed a 5A fuse, but I see on the bottom label of my cheap little Walmart air compressor it is rated at 12 amps. Will that blow the fuse eventually? Thanks.

The reason the socket is installed with a 2A fuse is because that's all the wiring harness is designed to handle. Sure, you could stick in a 20A fuse then run your 12A air compressor and watch smoke billow from the front of the bike as the wiring melts.

That's why lots of people prefer the powerlet outlets rather than the Honda one as they use much more substancial cable and are wired direct to the battery. Your Honda installed outlet will come off the quartet harness.

If I were you, I would keep the Honda installed socket but remove the wiring and re-wire with decent cable direct to the battery.

I don't know squat about electronics; can someone answer a question? I'm having a battery tender plug installed on my '05 ST. Is it possible to hook up any kind of portable air compressor to it, so I don't have to have a separate power outlet installed? The tender outlet will have a sort of pigtail type plug, Im not sure there are compatable compressor plugs, or if you can run a compressor directly off the battery? Any advice would be apprciated. Thanks!

You can definitely do that. The SAE connector is usually wired straight to the battery. So using a compressor should pose no problem.

Powerlet makes an adapter cable (SAE/CIGAR OUTLET - PAC-024) for about $15.

Bob B.: My post on the first page describes what you want, and has a Radio Shack link on how to get the SAE connector (Radio Shack does NOT call it an SAE connector).

Duh-sorry I didn't see that, thanks for the reply. As I said, pretty dumb about electronics, so with reference to your post on page one, what is "an inline fuse" that you connect the Radio Shack cord to the air compressor with? Thanks again!
