Thanks Keith. Black Rifle here, if anyone wants a variety this morning. Couple more attendees, and we may have a coffee bar happening.
Had a funny - and nice - thing happen to me as I went into a convenience store on the way home after work Friday afternoon.
I customer in front of me was paying for a 6- pack of Heineken, and he saw me in my helmet and jacket, looked out the glass doors and said, "Hey -- nice bike."
I replied, "Thanks, I like it a lot. And I was just thinking, a cold beer would sure taste good right now (it was 96° out), but I have to get home before I have one."
He said, "Here, have this! as he tried to stuff it in my half-zipped jacket."
I said Really?, he said yeah, smiled, and I took the bottle from him with many thanks.
The cashier put it in a plastic bag for me (container laws, etc.), and I stuck it in a pocket of my panniers.
Though it would be very nice to have one after cutting the grass Saturday morning.
And it was. (More later, I'm getting ahead of myself.)
Friday evening after work and after i had put my Heinie (the one in the bottle, silly) in the fridge, I replaced the fan motor switch, and tried to fill the radiator. It got too dark to finish, so Saturday morning I went to finish the job.
The new radiator neck has a molded-in baffle in the filler neck, making it impossible to actually see the top of the radiator fins inside.
Annoying.
Started the car, and the fans still never came on. The temp needle went to HOT.
Damn.
I jumpered the wiring harness side again, and the fans both came on.
Did I have a new switch, DOA?
I added more coolant, a half pint at a time, so as not to overfill it. (If only I could see the top of the radiator, inside!)
Saw coolant at the bottom of the filler neck, and the overflow tank was still at MAX.
Crawled back under the car, and found various drops of coolant on various parts of the engine. Cleaned them all up and went to try again.
After idling for eight and a half minutes, both fans kicked on, and continued to run till I turned off the motor at 15 minutes.
SUCCESS!
Finally.
No parts left over.
No missing parts either.
I paid for two new radiator hoses (not necessary), a new radiator, 2 gallons of coolant, a radiator fan switch... and a new battery, unrelated to the above.
But my labor was free, and learning a new skill has to be worth something.

After that I cut the front yard and enjoyed a free beer.
After a shower, had a brief a 2-hour nap until Roz woke me up to go to our great-nephew's first birthday party.
That was uneventful.
Today I may or may not cut the back yard.
But I will have another refill.
The 10mm socket: It vanishes into another dimension the second you look away.
Easy jobs: They do not exist. Every simple fix turns into a three-day project.
