I just replaced my wrecked HJC with an RF1000 and have a couple questions.

Does anyone use the 'breath guard' or the 'chin curtain' that comes with it?

Turns out that sizing is difficult. I'm DIRECTLY BETWEEN a medium and a large on both the sizing chart and trying them on. I went with the large because the medium did feel a bit too tight too break in to a correct fit even though a voice in my head told me I should go with the smaller one. Mistake?

Feels great right now, looking forward to using it to assess noise etc.

I can't say regarding your decision to go with the large but they do tend to get a little looser over time. I have both pieces installed in my Shoei. I like the fact that the chin piece keeps a bit of the cold air out. I still get a bit of fogging with the nose piece in place but it might be worse without it. YMMV
 
I do not use either the curtain or the breath guard. The RF 1000 is a very quiet helmet and I found no difference using either.
The only solution to fogging is a pinlock visor which works very well IMHO.
 
I think you can get different thickness cheek pads from Shoei to improve the fit a little. They snap right out and in.
 
I installed both the chin curtain as well as the breath guard when I got the helmet. However, it seemed the breath guard made the fogging worse for me than after I removed it. I do wear glasses, so it may be worse for me. BUT, I feel the chin curtain DOES curtail a bit of wind noise.

+1 on the cheek pads. You can always get thicker ones once yours sack out.

AND, I must be the only guy that doesn't have much good to say about the Pinlock. I put the lens on the shield and got a few fingerprints on it. I used Kleenex to wipe the prints off and now the lens is so scratched it looks like it is a different color. I find the scratches more distracting than the fog. Worst $70 I have spent.

LOVE the helmet, though.

I use both, I find the chin guard in the winter months does as Byron stated but it also keeps the pesky bee's and such out in the summer months.
If you have ever had a bee in your helmet you know what I'm talking about.

for my shoei rf-1000 i bought a clear shield from helmets.com or helmetcity.com with the pinlock installed along with the helmet sunblocker. the pinlock has worked perfectly and the nominal extra fee charged for the pros to install both items was well worth it. in the cooler months i use this shield and use a dark shield in the summer.

i do not use the chin curtain.
 
I dont know about a pinlock visor, but I have used Fog City shield inserts for several years now on my RF900. Absolutely NO fogging with them.
 
I am kind of the same way between a small and a medium in a RF1000. The pads loosen up a little when the helmet breaks in so I would have gone with the smaller size.

I do not use the breath guard or the chin curtain. My glasses fog up to easily.

I have a Pinlock though and like it very much.

Never use paper tissues or towels to clean a shield with unless they are specifically treated for use as lens cleaners. The bits of cellulose in paper products scratch the plastic - so says my brother the eye doc.

The chin curtain does help to reduce some noise, especially wind noise to my comunications, but the breath guard is just in the way and fogs my glasses so I leave it out. I was surprised by how easily this helmet fogs up, so that is something you will have to address, I ride with it cracked open all the time.

I used the Shoei breath guard last winter...didn't do much for me. This winter I've used the "Foggy" breath guard from Aerostitch. It's better...works great if perfectly adjusted, no fog and a warm chin and nose...but it gets out of adjustment easy and then my glasses fog if the humidity is high.

One problem I've had with my RF1000 since day one is that it leaks to the inside of the shield and water droplets run down and streak the inside of the shield. Same if the shield is closed or up one notch. I'm thinking maybe the ST backdraft is the problem!?!?
 
pinlock?

Hi all,
I'm about to order a RF1000 and read this thread. I googled pinlock but don't quite understand. Do you drill holes in your visor for these pins? Order a visor with them already in?
 
Shoei is a great helmet for people between sizes since they offer non-standard size cheek pads. By this, I mean that if your helmet takes a 35mm cheek pad and the next size cheek pad used in a helmet is 39mm, they offer a 37mm cheek pad to tighten the fit a bit but not as much as having gone down a full size in helmet as you would with the medium. Go to a helmet site and look for Shoei accessories and you will find the different cheek pads offered. I have even used two different cheek pad sizes in the same helmet for a perfect and comfortable fit. Good luck.

Well, I found out it wasn't me or the shield. At the risk of sounding stupid (too late), I pulled the shield back out to give it one more chance and realized it still had the protective sheeting on the inside. Pulled it off and VOILA, crystal clear. I take back all the bad comments. This is now the BEST money I have spent in a while...

I am on my second Shoei RF-1000. I love the helmet. For the first two seasons, I used the face mask and the chin curtain. Unless I was going 70 mph though, I had a fogging issue if my face plate was fully closed. Once when I ran into some cold weather after I had removed the face mask and chin curtain for the season, I found that even comnpletely locked up, I had no fogging proble. I have not worn the face mask or chin curtain since. Rarely does my chin get cold. But, I can deal with that more effectively than I was able to deal woith the fogging when I wore the face mask and chin curtain.

The helmet does break in after about 25 hours. At first, I had to wear a doo rag to keep my ears from bending over when I put the helmet on. But after about 25 hours, the helmet fits wonderfully and my ears were comfortable.

you made a good choice on your helmet! Quality and safety is there.

I used Fog City shield for over 5 years on my daily commute in the Seattle rain. Never fogs up ever. On the downside the visibility isn't great and I hated the star effect of street lights. They do get scratched up and require replacing ever so often.
Now that I'm retired and don't get into rain as much I would rather deal with the fogging and have a clear shield to look through. I usually don't have a problem after I get moving and have the windshield in its usual down position. When it fogs I usually just crack the shield open a little.

I recently bought an X-11 and it is fogging worse then my RF1000. This could be caused by the breath guard. I had never thought of that. I'll try removing it and see if it improves.
