I needed to remove the plastic protector that sits below the carbs to access the piping, it literally disintegrated into a hundred pieces !

I'm looking at creating a replacement out of a waterproof flexible plastic sheeting and wondered if anyone had been down this road previously and perhaps had a template ?

Hello:

Well, no wonder it perished- it's hot in Dubai! :)

Others have encountered the same problem (even in cold weather climates) - here are a couple of links that provide you with more information and a template to create a new one. The part is commonly called a 'heat mat'.

Under carb rubber mat

Rubber Mat Under Carbs Missing?

The template is attached to the second post. Before you start cutting rubber, assemble the template and cut the holes out of it with scissors, then fit the paper template over your carb intake ports to make sure that it "scaled correctly" when you printed it. Sometimes, printers will change the scale of a document by a few percentage points when printing documents - best to confirm this has not happened using a paper mock-up rather than after you have cut up a piece of rubber.

Here is a direct link to downloading the template: click here. It's a PDF. Best to print it directly from Adobe's PDF application if you have that app. When you print it, be sure to select "Actual Size" from within the print dialog box. The default selection is "fit", and you don't want that because it will for sure cause scaling difficulties. See the image below.

Chances are you will have A4 size paper, and the person who made the template PDF document used North American 8 1/2 by 11 inch "letter" size paper. If you encounter any problems with your printer asking you to insert "letter" paper, just grab 6 sheets of A4 paper and cut 17 mm off the bottom of the A4 paper. Then feed that into the printer. By cutting 17 mm off the bottom, you will fool the printer into thinking that you have loaded North American letter size paper. Don't worry about the A4 paper being 6 mm narrower than letter size, the printer won't notice that difference.

also, if anyone has a honda part number that would be appreciated, I have had a look on the parts fiches and can't find it !

I got mine from Ronayers.com for around $60. I would have made one myself but I just couldn't have the confidence that any of the materials that I could find were capable of withstanding the hostile environment under the carbs. In my mind I kept seeing the home-made barrier bursting into flames while the wife and I were cruising down the highway, so, for peace of mind I gritted my teeth and paid the OEM price. Not sorry...

What is the protector for ? Is it to reflect heat away from the carbs or to keep water out or something else ?

My guess is that it's to keep the gasoline from getting boiled out of the carbs by engine heat. But...

I'm pretty sure it is to minimize heat transfer upwards to the carburetors. The Honda nomenclature for the part is "Rubber, Engine Heat Guard".

I had to replace the rubber mat in my ST11. I contemplated purchasing the material and cutting, but if I screwed it up once, it was nearly the cost of the Honda OEM, so I just bit the bullet and bought the OEM. Less hassle and perfect fit.
