Helmets Putting a Sena SMH10 on a Shoei Neotec II helmet

On the N2, I guess you get used to reaching that far back, or is it not as far back as it looks? On the SMH10, the phone button is at the very back of the unit.

It looks further than it is... and yes I'm used to it. Not an issue.

One of those is a 20S and the other is a 50S and both have the phone button on the back of the unit.

I just bought an HJC I90 modular helmet that has the sun screen slider on the side in the same location as the Shoei you are looking at. My Sena is a 20S but the buttons are in the same location. I clamp my Sena on my helmet and was concerned just like you that moving it back on the helmet would be an awkward location.

The reality was just the opposite and within just a few minutes was perfectly comfortable with it there. No inconvenience at all…..in fact, I like it better. The only issue to be aware of is that the microphone will extend into your mouth area about one inch less but that hasn’t been an issue either.

I moved to the HJC from a Shoei Neotec that I have had a few years and I find it to be more comfortable for my head, just as quiet and less expensive to boot. If only it had that Shoei sticker on the front…..

I'm replacing an HJC I90 because the detents on the face shield wore down and the shield won't stay up. Revzilla is replacing it under warranty since I've had it less than a year. The I90 replaced an HJC I-Max 2 that was also replaced under warranty because the sunscreen mechanism broke. So, I'm kinda done with HJC, although the RPHA is intriguing, but probably won't make the cut. I think it's down to the Shoei Neotec II, Schuberth C3 Pro or the Klim TK1200.

On the subject of Sena... does anyone have a spare adhesive mounting base for an SMH5? I've always used the clamp base but have now bought a Schuberth helmet that won't accept it. I can buy the pad at £3.31 ($4.33)... but for shipping it, they want £16.99 ($22.21).

But if you had the I90, you likely had your Sena mounted in or very near the position right behind the sun screen button it will need to go on your Shoei

Just recently bought a new Shoei and mounted a Sena 50. Took some figuring out but I got her in there.

I have a couple of Shoei Neotec I, that I have the Sena 30Ks mounted to. And connected to my Garmin Zumo 660.

I then bought a Neotec II, and I didn't like mounting the 30K back so far, so I bought the Sena SRL 1. The first time out, I hated it due to the volume control buttons. I then connected my "wrist" remote to it, and I can control the volume through that. Then on my trip out to Kaliforniastan, back in January, I forgot to charge it overnight. 30 miles into my trip, the message was coming up saying low battery. That continued for the rest of the trip to Elk Grove, which was about 2 hours. I was surprised it lasted that long...

And nothing like throwing a wrench into it, I up graded my Garmin Zumo 660, to a Zumo XT. I have managed to get one of my 30Ks to communicate with the XT, but I still need to add the SRL 1 and the other 30K, and my phone, as I had it connected with my 660.

It seems, everytime I "Upgrade" I seem to loose functionality that I had with the previous unit!

I just love advanced technology...NOT!

Thanks for all the input, it really was helpful. I pulled the trigger on a Schuberth C3 Pro over the Shoei Neotec II for several reasons (in order of importance to me)... quality of shield ratcheting mechanism, comms placement, weight, quietness, and lastly price, $250 cheaper. Of course, these are all based upon dozens of reviews I read/watched, not personal experience. Fortunately, Revzilla has a good return policy, which I've used before.

I probably would have have gone with the Klim TK1200, but prefer the drop down sun shield over the transition lens. The Schuberth C4 Pro seems to be a bit of a dud and the C5 just came out, but couldn't find a stateside dealer that I trusted. There are rumors of a new Neotec, but I can't wait that long. So, the C3 Pro was the eventual winner. In all cases, a built-in comm system was a no-go from the start.

Thanks Dave. Did you clamp it on or stick it on? I've been wary of just sticking it on, but have heard it works well if done properly.

Paul.....hahaha....I'm in the same boat with Sena Smh10 and new Shoei GT Air2. If I decide to use stick on, guess I'll put a leash on it. hahaha

I wore it (Schuberth C3 Pro) in the Heart of Texas Rally this past weekend, which was abut 1500 miles total for me, including 400 just before and after the actual rally. I like the helmet a lot, with one minor issue... the chin strap is a little "bothersome" after several hours with the helmet on. The strap doesn't really irritate my neck, I just found myself moving it around as I could feel and notice it. I seem to have gotten used to it towards the end, so maybe it will be ok. I do like the ratcheting strap lock over the old d-ring style, but it took a little getting used to.

The helmet is really light and noticeably quieter than my previous HJC and Shoei. Airflow is as good or better than any helmet I've ever had, but still wish it was better. It did come with a Pinlock insert installed, which was surprising... thought it only came with the Pinlock ready face shield. Overall it's a really well made helmet. Installing my Sena SMH10 was pretty easy, but I did have to use the stick-on rubber backing instead of the mechanical clamp. I'm a little hesitant about that, but will see how it works over time. I ordered one size up (XL), and it's still a little tight, but should loosen up a bit over time. TBH, I think my last two helmets were too big. I really didn't want an integrated comm system, Cardo or Sena, so this is what I ended up with.

I have one on my Neotec2, its located further back on the helmet than normal and i did have to modify the mounting bracket. Trimmed about a .25 inch off. I only have about 4000 m on the setup. It works..

I thought I had a Shoei-shaped head but the Schuberth fits me better. I have a 57cm head; medium-size helmets have always felt slightly too big, with small much too tight and large much too loose. This Schuberth medium C3 is pretty snug, but not uncomfortably so. It's pretty quiet with the shield down, and very quiet with earplugs. I'll have to try and adapt my Sena bracket, or mount the unit with 3M VBH tape or DualLock "velcro-on-steroids".

I bought a Shuberth C3 pro and Neotec 1 at approximately the same time. I preferred the Schberth, and wore it out. Now I'm on the Neotec. Since it is more than 5 years old I know I should start looking for a replacement. Schuberth has the new C5 that meets the stricter European standards, but is not DOT certified here yet, at least not the last time I checked. It's on my radar.

my question is as I'm ordering online, how is the sizing on the neotec 2 compared to the neotec 1?
I tried on a neotec 1 some years ago and found the size L fitted well but I'm wondering if the neotec 2 version is a bit snugger? thanks.

You're correct the Sena for the Neotec II is equal to one of Sena's earlier model. They have upgraded, but I'm not spending the bucks for it. When I ride with a group, I'll use my Neotec I, with the 30K mnd Mesh, which worked really good when I was riding with others that had the 50Ks.

As for comfort, I find them about the same. My reason for getting the Neotec II was for the Sena fitting in it like it does, but it's weak and that pisses me off!

Before you decide, I would suggest if you are going to attach a comm system to it, look in the comm system and how it mounts on/in the Noetec II.

I ended up buying the C5 and decided to glue my Sena 50s to the side of the helmet with VHB tape and an adhesive promoter. Still holding!

I found a 3D file for a spacer to fit the Sena SMH5 bracket and had it printed. With some slightly longer M3 screws, it allowed me to attach the bracket to my Schuberth C3, sandwiched between the Sena's moulded bracket and the metal plate..
