I hope this is the right place to be posting this question, can any one tell me where the regulator/rectifier is on a pan european ST1100 year model 2000 ex police bike. Also would it be compatible with a lithium ion battery. If not is there a friendly regulator/rectifier that i could fit that would be ok to run with a lithium ion battery, Hope some one can help many thanks in advance.

Merv

On the 2000 models the regulator/rectifier is integral with the alternator, which is bolted to the rear of the engine on the lower left side. It's just inboard and ahead of the left foot peg.

As long as the charging voltage remains below 15 volts, you should not have any issues using a lithium battery. Connect a voltmeter directly to your battery so that you can safely see the charging voltage while riding and ride around under a variety of conditions to confirm the charging voltage. After I did my upgrade (from the 28A stator) I consistently saw 14.2-14.4 V under all conditions with the integral alternator R&R assembly.

Several months ago I replaced my lead acid battery with a lithium battery and did not change the regulator on my 1300. Both oem chargers (1100/1300) will slightly under charge the lithium battery, which is a good thing !! You never want to over charge a lithium battery. I commute every day on the bike so the battery gets cycled. Still working fine.

I would (and did) opt for an AGM battery (mine was from Walmart) for my 1100 three years ago.

Even after sitting outdoors through each winter under a cover, without any battery charge or tender, it starts every time as if it had been ridden the day before.

on the back of my alternator i have a single threaded stem on it's own and two terminals together, could some one tell me what colour wires fit to theses terminals and where do they run to into the loom ,as mine are missing and i'm trying to repair that part of the loom
Many thanks in advance

Merv

The larger wire coming from the threaded post goes directly to the battery via a 55 or 60A fuse. IIRC there is only one smaller wire that goes to a two wire connector but only one side is used. I don't recall which terminal is used at that end though. There is a sub harness available from Honda that is plug and play here.

Thanks, would you have a link to the sub harness or part number

Jeff covered the main wire in the sub harness; the little black lead goes from the plug on the alternator to the small black 2P connector on the left side of the ST. I suppose I could dig up a picture if necessary.

Edit: how did your OEM alt harness come to be ‘missing”?

Hi John
So i could make up a black wire but what pin on the alternator would it fit on and where do it connect to after that. I would appreciate a picture.
I picked up the bike from a mate who partly strip it for spares the rest of the bike was to good to scrap so i'm slowly piecing it back together.

I’d buy the Honda part, Merv, but if you want to make your own, here’s a schematic of a DIY harness by Keith Vinson, STOC 6666, that should help:

Be sure to tightly sandwich the ring connector on the alternator’s post between two 5mm nuts. DAMHIKT

Here’s an image showing the location of the little black 2P that’s fastened to a mounting prong on the left side frame:

A schematic from the Service Manual:

In your case I’m assuming that you will have to discard the 2P and make your own, as you don’t have the other half of the OEM connector.

Thanks John
The wiring on the bike was so bad i had to strip a lot of it out. I have bought a part loom for the bike but some parts i think are missing. I understand the red wire going to a 55amp fuse and i understand the black wire coming from one of the other terminals on the alternator but i don't see where the other end of the black wire connects to. Could i splice it somewhere else, what part of the circuit must it be attached to. this is all very new to me and i'm trying to figure it out as i go along.

Merv, the light-weight black lead from the alternator (OEM or DIY) goes to the black 2P depicted in the schematic and circled in the image I posted.

Then i have a problem because i haven't got that 2p, as i said the bike has been messed about with and i'm trying to make good the best way i can. If the red wire is live would that make the black wire a earth of some sort , or could i splice it into somewhere else, I appreciate you trying to help me help.

Is there a clipped black wire in that area, maybe capped, or perhaps hidden just back up inside the taped up wire loom?

I don’t have one to post, or know where to find one, but can someone chime in here for Merv with the wiring diagram (or link to one) for the later years’ police/authority model?

FWIW, here’s the one for USA ’96-‘02 models (from article in the ST1100 Archive Of Wisdom {AOW} over on ST-Riders.net [Wiring Diagrams, Colored (ST1100)]):

Could the connector be in the alternator? This is the Back of the Alternator when in the bike.
What do you see in the black connector?
The Top of the T is where the black wire goes. Read all of the little notes around the small wire in Johns post #14
