Rotella and other diesel oils?

FWIW, I have a lawn mower that gets used year-round because grass never stops growing here.

I put whatever amount of 5W-30 in it when I bought it in 1997. Its never been changed in 29 years. I think I topped it off once.

Think I worry much about motor oil??

Thank you so much for writing this. I've felt so bad for not changing my oil in the last couple years on my lawn mower. Mower doesn't get used much at all. It still looks clean.

I feel so much better now.

P.S. Since I didn't see a lawn mower on the front of the diesel Rotella oil container, I didn't use Rotella in it. And yet, mysteriously, it still runs.

I've got over 25 bikes running Walmart Supertech 15W-40 DIESEL OIL!!! @gunsmoker switched back to synthetic and started calling @Igofar complaining about how HOT the bike started running.
 
I confess I have a "problem". I'm hoping someone here can help out with the definitive answer.

My problem? I reused my oil drain crush washer. :eek: Will the engine explode? Will it drip oil onto my rear tire causing a catastrophic accident? I am highly distraught.

What's more is when we moved, I found two bags full of crush washers. What should I do with them???

The 5 gallon pail of Rotella is just right. 7 qts in F250, 7 in the SUV, 4 in bike, and the last 2 in mower.

Plus, I get a free 5 gallon bucket.

Oh my gosh... @dwalby raised a question in my mind...

...as old as I am ...did I or didn't I install the crush washer when I changed the oil? I'm getting a bit forgetful in my old age. That might be why I have accumulated all these crush washers!!!

Now, should I take out the drain plug to check if the crush washer is still there? ;)

I'm so glad this oil thread has come back alive so everyone can re-evaluate their flimsy position of what is good oil and what is GOOD OIL.

Also "good" filters are being discussed. See below.

I've noticed that my local Walmarts don't have the supertech oil filters right now. They also told me, and I read (what me read?) that First Brands group is going thru bankruptcy. No Fram filters and no Supertech filters. I had to buy a Purolator filter for my lowly Civic last oil change. Ouch!

My 1966 VW Beetle didn't need things like an oil filter. They just had an oil strainer.

I figured that was so if the engine disintegrated, the strainer would pick up the big pieces.

I used Rotella in my previous Honda for 15 years with no problems. I just changed the ST to Rotella and the clutch rattle is gone. It's like magic.
 
okay, I’ll be the newbie here, sorry folks. I know OIL threads are the bane of anything to do with a motor.

Serious question, 2001 ST-1100. Owners manual suggests SF/SG 10w40 oil. No mention of any JASO specs and of course Honda branded oil is expensive. Yes I did try the search feature here. I recall hearing a few yrs ago that synthetic oil can cause shifting/transmission issues, maybe I am wrong?
Seriously what is the consensus for motor oil for my bike? 31,000 original km’s.

Well, I'm not into technical stuff but here in Europe I have always used Semi-Synthetic 10/40. My current oil is Motul 5000 10-40 4T, In the past I've used Castrol Power 1 4T, Silkolene and a few others. Can't be doing any harm 'cos the old lady has managed 168,000 miles so far and the younger 2000 1100 50,000.

The crush washers work better if flipped over each oil change👍

Thank-you for your reply. You likely know this - to be called and rated as a Semi-Synthetic, or Synthetic blend, product a manufacturer only needs to put one drop of something synthetic in the formula. No manufacturer will disclose how much of their product is “synthetic” in their semi or syn-blends. Is it 50/50, 70/30, 30/70, 90/10, 10/90? No one, but the manufacturers, know(s) this info and they ain’t telling.
I m in Canada, btw.
