Setting Up A Chinavasion Rage GPS

Thanks for jumping in Pieterv. So, is the consensus that the 5" gen2 will run straight Primo 2.4 without the MC skin? I want to get the 5" device soon and need to decide which nav software to purchase.

Kiltman was quicker! (Thanks)

I am running straight Primo as the mod doesn't support my resolution.

What is so strange is that I am running the MC Mod (1.9) on three of my 5" GEN1 units and it runs just fine. In fact, I pulled out the micro sd card from one of them and put it in the GEN2 unit just to be sure I hadn't messed something up. I wonder what the difference is. :think1:

I believe the 1.9 version got streamlined and doesn't have all of the extra bits that the 2.4 has, so the file may not be as big. It also could have the resolutions modified too . I will have to go get the translation from my dad over lunch.

Not sure which generation I have. I have just bought it and it has 8GB, whereas I think previously they had 4GB, so maybe indeed Gen 2?

Just been on a two day ride, and it did all it was supposed to do (with Primo 2.4).

The 1.9 version is the one I have and it says that the 800x480 resolution is not 'there'. I'll keep digging and see if I can come up with anything.

So, just to clarify, it did run on a 800x480 device (just the older Gen 1)? Thanks.

Pieterv - From what Chinavasion told me, Gen 1 has 4GB and Gen 2 has 8GB, so it appears that you have Gen 2 (noted by Gen2 in the product number on their website). How do you know you have 8 GB (just curious)? I bought my 3 Gen 1s on sale ($108 each) when they were clearing them out. On all three of the Gen 1s, I can run Primo 2.4 with the MC 1.9 mods just fine at the 800X480. The additional Gen 2 I have complains about the resolution. I even pulled the micro sd out of one of my Gen 1s and put it in the Gen 2 to make sure it wasn't a bad micro sd. Could you list what you have in your sys.txt file (it's in the PRIMO root directory)? It would be interesting to see if there are some parameters in there to deal with the resolution. BTW, where are you located in the UK?

Thanks for the clarification. It is very strange though.

It was sold as 8GB and hooking it up to a PC shows as a removable drive with 7.25GB.

I live in Lichfield, a bit North of Birmingham, but am originally from the Netherlands.

The satnav came with IGo 8 (I added Primo), so the sys.txt from 8 is probably most relevant, as that is what the manufacturer put on:

[interface]
skin="ui_igo8"
vga=0
mapfontscale=100
show_exit=1

[rawdisplay]
class="landscape"
highres=0
screen_x=800
screen_y=480

[tts]
tts_buffer=131072
tts_logics=3
priority="HIGH"
always_say_road_names=1
announce_street_name=1
expected_engine_delay=1400

[debug]
skip_eula=1
enable_roadshadow=1

[map]
auto_nightmode=0

[msnd]
msnd.start=0

As you can see there is an entry for resolution, although I don't have that in Primo and it runs fine.

I am curious now, and will try the mod. Will let you know how I get on.

FWIW, I just ordered the 5" Gen2 and will order Primo. Hope to get some help here setting it up! Thanks.

Pieter - I hate to be a bother, but what does the sys.txt for PRIMO look like (the same)? Does it have the [rawdisplay] parameter in it? That is what sets the resolution in IGO8 and PRIMO from what I understand. Also, is PRIMO installed on a micro sd or on the 'internal' memory?

[rawdisplay]
class="landscape"
highres=0
screen_x=800
screen_y=480

Primo is in internal memory and doesn't have the resoltion in the sys.txt.

Pieterv - Then it sounds like the 'mod' is the problem. I am still at a loss as to why it works fine on my Gen1 units but not the Gen2 when supposedly the only thing that changed was more internal storage. When I looked at the files on MC 1.9, I can see they have no setup for 800X480 so I can't figure out how the Gen1 units are working with it.:think1:

Yes, that doesn't seem to make any sense.

I tried the skin the Moto one is based on ("decent skin") which has the higher resolution files. This runs fine and gives some of the benefits the Moto skin does, but not the ones to do with handling waypoints.

When I bring it up, it immediately complains about the resolution and will not execute. If I 'fake it out' with lower screen size in the sys.txt, it will come up to the map screen, but then has a fatal error as soon as I try to select any menu item. In the 'skin' file, there are 320X240 and 480X272 files. I even tried to 'create' 800X480 files by duping them just to see what would happen. BTW, I happen to be a IT professional and software developer for 40+ years, so this really has me puzzled as to why it works on Gen1 and not Gen2. It does not make good 'computer sense'. I'm trying to figure out what else changed between Gen1 and Gen2. I really do appreciate your effort also on this. The MC 1.9 mods are really a great improvement - especially the better dealing with the waypoints. Maybe Mark from the Dutch forum will come back and come up with the 800X480 resolution mods!

Well, sitting here with a Gen1 and Gen2 side by side. The Gen1 does have only 4gb internal and the Gen2 has 8gb internal. But then I noticed something else - the Gen2 resolution for the 'system' menus is much finer (smaller print and icons) on the Gen2 than the Gen1. My supposition is that on the Gen1, it is not set to 800X480, but the Gen2 is (a Windows screen size issue). So when Primo comes up, it checks what the screen resolution is, finds an acceptable one on the Gen1 and works, finds 800X480 on the Gen2 and doesn't work since the MC 1.9 does not have a 800X480 resolution option per the Dutch website and per my digging around in the files. I would suppose with a Windows hack, you could reset the resolution on the Gen2 to match the Gen1, but the problem with the hack is if you mess it up, there is no recovery - all you have left is a nice paper weight.

What happens if you load the original 2.4 Motorcycle edition that Mark sent us? I can send you that link if you wish
There were just a couple of changes from the 2.4 to the 1.9
You had some issues with that version as well didn't you?

Please PM the link. I'd like to see if it will run on my Gen2. I bet if I can figure out a way to hack into the Win Ce on the device, I can change the resolution as a option under Windows. So far, none of the suggested hacks on other sites work. I was able to execute a REGEDIT on the GPS but with no keyboard, I couldn't change anything. It appears there are a couple of registry settings that will allow you to get to the Win CE as a menu option.

Well spotted, that would explain it.
