speedometer quit working

Has anybody else experienced this? My speedo just suddenly stopped working while on my way home a couple of days ago. The cable itself is new as of last winter and I pulled it out at the wheel to make sure it was still good.

It looks still new and the gearbox that it goes into at the wheel/axle is turning as the front wheel spins but no movement at the gauge. Neither the speed is registering nor is the odometer.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This is a '93 ST 1100 with "only" 108,000 miles on it.

If the drive gear is working and the cable is good I think the only part left is the gauge itself. Maybe something just got out of alignment? I am just spitballing here, I've only ever messed with the bottom half of the speedo. Mine acts up occasionally, bouncing at highway speeds. This is even after a good cable cleaning and lube.
 
Thanks for the replies friends. I'll be in touch after I tear into the gauge panel. Just hate the fact that so much has to be removed to get to the meter.:(
 
I have the same problem and also suspected the gauge, but I put a flat blade bit in my drill and spun the cable, which quickly showed me that the gauge was fine. After looking more closely I realized that the blade that the cable mates up to in the gear box had snapped off short enough that the cable could no longer reach it. Now I have a different gear box to install the next time I remove my front tire.
 
Are you sure you installed the end of the cable into the speedometer housing correctly? It has been a while since I replaced one, it's a square drive?
 
Update.......after tearing into it today, I found the cable does indeed make the meter work, so tomorrow I will remove the front wheel and take a look at the gearbox. I suspect I will find the culprit there.

To bad this was not a contest. If so, you would be the winner. After taking the gear box off, I too discovered the blade was nearly worn down to what looks like only 1 or 2 mm. Definately not enough to engage with the cable. $88 later and 4 business days, I will have a new one to install.

I just had this problem during the IBR. Got back from the dealer today after having the cable replaced. Half way home it just stopped again.

Anyone have any pics of the gearbox? Ayone want to venture as to whether or not I bought a new cable fr nothing?

Your help is greatly appreciated
 
Gee Sal, with only 350,000 miles on your bike, it may be a defective part! LOL
 
Just ordered the gear box thingy and then the separate individual parts. Dealer is installing everything on Thursday and will take back anything not needed.
No I'm not that many miles but thanks for the thoughts.:)
 
I just had the front wheel out to do some work on the anti dive on the right fork,I was very happy with myself having done all the work myself,put her back together this evening and went for a short spin only to discover the speedo isn't working.
It was working fine before,the little spline was turning when I spun the wheel with the front end jacked up,can't figure what's wrong unless the cable has broken.

pull it apart and reinsert the cable into the housing, but pay close attention to the orientation of the tab on the drive side and the slot on the cable side. I think its possible to get those two misaligned, and still slide the cable end far enough into the drive housing that it looks tight, but the tab isn't actually engaged in the slot.

Also pull the tab out as far as possible with a pair of needle nose pliers, I think it can sometimes be pushed further into the housing due to misalignment, so you may have already pushed it in a bit.
