Hi all, I was thinking of putting handlebar raisers on my st1100 as to give me a more upright and relaxed riding position. Is this possible without having problems with throttle cable, brake-clutch hoses, wiring etc?? Also would it have any negative effect on the handling of the bike, and most of all is it worth it??

I am looking to do that as well.

I already have put the 1" risers on and am looking to put Heli-Bar Risers on to bring them up and back as far as possible.

Just not this far...

Dec,

You will see the choice between Heli bar risers or Gen Mar (usa). I do not know if Gen Mar is sold in the Ireland. I have tried both. Gen Mars will work with your existing bars. Heli bars are complete after market replacements and is my current setup.

I had to re-route the clutch line and throttle cable behind the triple clamp. The brake lines were replaced with Galfer lines +3 in length. I do not know if the oem brake lines would work but re-routing can be done.

The plastice handle bar cover would have to modified or not used in either case.

The heli-bars made the ST far more comfortable. I can not handle very much forward lean for long distances.

Hope that helps

Dec,
You can also use the "police risers" for the 1100. They provide about a 1" lift. All I had to do was loosen the clamp on the front brake hose and slide the hose up a bit. I ride without the cover since all my previous rides had "naked handlebars" and I like the look. I just added a chrome cap nut to the steering stem to keep water out.

Link has the part numbers and a photo comparison between the police riser and doubling up on the clamp cap (flip-clip) mod. Part number for the steering stem nut I used for my O1-1100 was 95020-11300. Police riser number was 53134-MZ9-900 and the required collars are 42313-GE2-000. Cost was about $70 U.S.

If you go more than an inch, you may need to consider longer hoses.

I don't think the tradeoff is worth the added back pain risers produce, ymmv. I couldn't ride my Valkyrie for 15 minutes without pain right between the shoulders, I never feel that on my ST with stock bars, but my hips and knees do hurt for a few seconds when I get off.

Hi Dec...........The Heli-Bars ARE the way to go on the 11's. No need to go with longer brake hoses, etc. I'm just 5'10"@175lbs. and with the Corbin seat(which I don't care for on l-o-n-g rides, should of got the Russell)they are way nicer than stock, as you can set angle, height, etc. to your liking. Reason anyone would have a problem with them, is likely due to not relaxing upper body when riding. That comes with years of riding, long distance riding, familiar with bike, etc. The ONLY other problem is They are not made for the ST11 anymore as of last year. You'll have to keep an eye out for a used set, and even at that expect to pay $150+ for a used set. I know, as I put a nice used set on my Yamaha XS11 Venturer last year purchased here locally. Definitely worth having on the scoot! Kinda like definitely worth having a Russell Day Long seat.

DEC - If you only need about 1 inch of rise, you can do the flip-clip mod, which takes an extra set of top handlebar clamps and usually costs about $25 USD. If that would work, just PM me your email address and I'll send you the details.

Thanks all for the information on the bars. As i have a 300 mile run to the Irish bike fest (killarney) in June i will have to adapt the bars for more comfort.

Cheers

Re: ST1100 handlebar risers

There are some police risers for sale here on the board.

Hopefully Jason wouldn't mind sending them to Northern Ireland via United States Postal Services. Shouldn't be expensive.

I'm 6' 3" and the police risers on their own were just right for me on the 1100. But you could do the "flip-clip" mod on these, too, and thus get a 2-inch height increase from standard.

I put 2" risers on my '01 ST1100 and it totally transformed the ride for me. Previously I was getting severe wrist pain from the pressure of leaning on the bars. There was a minimal re-routing of the right front brake hose required, but all of the others hoses/wires were just fine. The only drawback was that I had to lose the handlebar cover which I rather liked. On the flip side, with the triple tree now exposed, I mounted a RAM-Mount in the triple tree tube so my GPS is centered in front of me instead of up on the right handgrip.

In addition to the risers, I put on Grip Puppies to increase the size of the diameter of the grips and throttle rests on both grips to allow me to loosely grip the handlebars.
