ST1100 Sub air filter replacement!!!

i checked my filter and it fell apart!! has anyone had rough running conditions because of broken filter?

This is part of my periodic check and I change it with the air filter. The manual says to replace the air filter every 12000 miles. Look more often than that.

I always check it when changing the air filter. Sometimes it becomes brittle and falls apart, and that’s not good for the carbs. If still soft and spongy, then I wash it and make sure it is dry before putting it back. The housing will be getting brittle with age, so remove carefully.

It acts as a 'fly screen', filtering the air before it reaches the main air filter, so if it falls apart, the bits will be caught by the main air filter. I suppose it is there to prevent things like insects with sharp pointy attachments from reaching the air filter.

The engine will run perfectly well without one - but that main filter is sucking through 1.1 litre of air every 2 revolutions. That's about 37 litres per second at 4000 rpm - quite an airflow. Anything large coming in at that rate could damage the main filter, and that would be bad for the carbs and engine.

As far as I know this is Totally separate from the main air cleaner. It is to equalize the air behind the carb diaphrams and connects directly to the upper part of the carbs.

The sub air filter is not a prefilter for the main air box. It filters equalizing air going in/out of the diaphragm tops as vacuum is released.

I cut a square from a lawn mower foam filter too long ago. Probably due to change it. But if they can be had for that cheap then that's way better than paying $8-10 for another mower filter.
