i checked my filter and it fell apart!! has anyone had rough running conditions because of broken filter?
About every 24,000 (together with main filter), or when it shows any signs of deterioration...Do you change this filter often … FILTER, SUB AIR CL Part number: 17253KT8000
It acts as a 'fly screen', filtering the air before it reaches the main air filter, so if it falls apart, the bits will be caught by the main air filter. I suppose it is there to prevent things like insects with sharp pointy attachments from reaching the air filter.I always check it when changing the air filter. Sometimes it becomes brittle and falls apart, and that’s not good for the carbs. If still soft and spongy, then I wash it and make sure it is dry before putting it back. The housing will be getting brittle with age, so remove carefully.
As far as I know this is Totally separate from the main air cleaner. It is to equalize the air behind the carb diaphrams and connects directly to the upper part of the carbs. It acts as a 'fly screen', filtering the air before it reaches the main air filter, so if it falls apart, the bits will be caught by the main air filter. The engine will run perfectly well without one - but that main filter is sucking through 1.1 litre of air every 2 revolutions. That's about 37 litres per second at 4000 rpm - quite an airflow. Anything large coming in at that rate could damage the main filter, and that would be bad for the carbs and engine.
