Article [13] ST1300 - Secondary Master Cylinder Rebuild- SMC

It will with the pedal, if I’m confused someone will correct me.
The rear pistons will activate but solely due to the pressure being applied from the rear brake pedal. There is no pressurization of any brake piston in any caliper by the SMC if the motorcycle is stationary regardless of whether the front or rear brake is activated. The SMC can only be activated by applying brake pressure when there is forward motion of the motorcycle or if it is manually manipulated.

I am thinking that my rear brake pistons need to be cleaned, spraying with brake cleaner & pressed all the way in and add new brake pads to stop the whale sound rubbing while backing up? One thing that I have read is to add silicone grease under the SMC boot. I have never done this. I did pull the boot up some & was wondering how to get the grease under/in it?

Do not use brake cleaner. Many of these products cause seal swell and make things worse. Clean the pistons using brake fluid soaked in an old shoe lace that you see-saw back and forth to polish them.

I have an old plastic syringe that I used to pump some silicone grease under the boot as a moisture barrier.

As a quick test of your SMC put you ST1300 on the centre-stand. Lie down on the floor beside the motorcycles left side. While spinning the rear wheel with your right foot push the SMC upward and forward to cause it to pivot forward. If the SMC is in good working order the rear wheel should lock immediately and you will not be able to rotate it as long as you hold the SMC in the applied position. Release the SMC and the rear wheel should be free to rotate again. The SMC does not move very much but it should be able to easily lock the rear wheel.

Take note- You may unexpectedly apply more force then you intended to while doing this so be careful that you don't inadvertently push the motorcycle forward off of the centre-stand. Block the front wheel, or strap the centre-stand so it can not retract, etc., to prevent any possible tip-over.

This approach has been very effective for me, over the past 10 years of brake pad changes. A couple of minor variations I use are,,, a wider hockey skate lace,, and instead of brake fluid I use Autosol metal polish. It takes some practice to develop your own technique. But I do mine right on the bike, for both front and rear,,, avoiding the need to bleed too. cheers,,, CAt'
 
I think I have read to not use brake cleaner before. Shoelaces are a great idea. I have never been able to get to the caliper upper side to clean the pistons. I will also try the SMC test this way.

Just did the SMC test as suggested. Mine is passing this test. I have been concerned about this for around a month now. I will sleep better tonight. Thanks again for the help.
I always park my ST1300 on the centre-stand to conserve garage space. As part of my pre-ride check I always give the rear wheel a shove with my foot to see how freely it rotates. At the end of every ride, unless I forget, I do the same. I do this in the hope that I will notice any change in how freely the wheel rotates as an early warning sign of an impending SMC problem.

just for reference, how many revolutions are you getting with a carefully calibrated foot shove ? Just replaced my old smc , replaced all pads and bled the brake system. Trying to determine what initial level of drag or friction is normal. Getting about 1 1/2 revolutions right now before putiing any miles on the bike.

My initial reaction would be to say at least two but I have never actually measured it in any reliable way. It is certainly no less than 1 1/2. If you just put new pads on it will tend to drag a little more. After a bit of use it will likely improve a little after the new brake pads wear in to match the rotors.
 
Let me add some additional information to the discussion.

I bought my 1300 with a frozen SMC and replaced it with a new one. I have the kit to refurb the original as well, but that's a different conversation.

After all that work, I wanted to see how the SMC behaves in action on the bike, so I mounted a GoPro to the fork leg and put it through its paces. Maybe this will help everyone appreciate the amount of movement the SMC goes through in real world use.

A couple of additional snippets.

Reversing brake groan. Mine does that nearly every time I take it out of the shed. It seems to be caused by light surface rust on the disc surface - it is bare metal, free from any grease - it is going to rust - initially, a light coating which disappears with the first application of the brakes. Question should be, does it do it when you put it away ?

Putting silicone grease behind the rubber boot. Make absolutely certain that the boot is replaced correctly so that it seals. With the SMC all coupled up, I am unable to do it. I have only ever been able to do it with a very firm push from an appropriately sized cylindrical tool, and that means taking off the bracket that you should never remove. One reason that the SMC causes rear brake lock up, is the the SMC piston cannot return to its correct position. The tiny compensation port is not cleared because of this, and fluid cannot escape. So the rear caliper outer pistons remain out - pressing the pads against the rear disc. Normally when you press the brake pedal with the bike stationary in the garage, both brake lines from the rear master cylinder are in use. The direct line to the middle centre piston and the long line to the front calipers, through the SMC and back to the rear outer pistons. So the rear pedal operates all three rear caliper pistons. ‘Through the SMC’ is possible because the primary seal of all master cylinders only seal in one direction - ie when pumping fluid. On the return stroke, they yield to let fluid from behind pass - rather like the leather seal or rubber seal in a bicycle pump. On the upstroke, it lets air past the seal ready for the next downstroke.

But you cannot test your SMC operation with the rear brake pedal. The SMC piston should return by itself - pushed back by the spring. In the case of corrosion or gunge build up, it will not be able to do this and the rear brake will lock on. However, if you press your brake pedal, the fluid pressure cannot move the piston forwards, but the build up of pressure can move it backwards more forcefully than the spring can manage - forcing it past any debris, and clearing the compensation port.

The test with the rear wheel and applying the SMC by hand must be done without involving the rear pedal. And there are three tests: Does the wheel spin ok; Does the wheel stop when I apply the SMC by hand; Does the rear wheel release instantly when I release the SMC.

If you have been using the rear brake then do the above sequence a few times.

That snippet of information may give a clue to a developing SMC issue. If the first time you apply your brakes with just the pedal, does the pedal dip further than before ?
If you release the pedal and apply it again does it feel ‘tighter’ this time. Ie you don’t have to press it as far.
If that is the case it may suggest that the SMC piston isn’t returning fully after it has been applied. The dip in the pedal is caused by the first press moving the SMC back.
But the same behaviour can be caused by a slightly warped rear brake disc.
