I welded a few angle brackets to an old ATV rack and mounted an ATV lounge. Besides the storage I can lounge on the armrests going down the road.

Interesting out of the big thinking. That must be a drain on the fuel efficiency.

There is a fair chance that that added stress will crack the rear sub-frame. This is not uncommon on ST1100's that carry a top case. I no longer have an ST1100 but someone on here can post a photo showing you where the sub-frame needs to be reinforced.

This is cool, matches nice, I would be pondering Andrew's comment about the stress. This feels like one of those "I can, but should I?" projects.

It's mostly empty thanks to the saddlebags. I usually get 35-40 mpg mostly thanks to my 350 lbs. You have me worried now because I do pile about 80lbs on for camping but I tie the front down to the Passenger peg so it's not all trying to go backwards

Well that's a new one on me. Never heard of it over here. Givi Top boxes on all my 1100s, all used well, particulary on tour. 33 years worth of wear and 170,000 miles on the outfit!

I have had two ST1100's and I never experienced this either. This is something that I have read on this forum several times but every search on this forum returns Oops! We ran into some problems.
due to the data loss as a result of the site crash a while back. If I am mistaken about this someone will be along to correct me shortly.

In the ST1100 Basics / Buying Guide written by Paulcb this is mentioned as one of the things to look for but the link to that thread also leads to a dead link.
Known issues specific to the ST1100:
- A very small few (including me) have had the tail frame crack.

Even though I've never owned an 1100 I remember seeing the posts about the cracks in the subframe and welding it back together. There were also posts about preemptive welding an insert piece to prevent the cracking. I don't recall how many posts there were or even if it was "a lot". But it was "a thing". There's probably Venn diagram potential regarding bike age/weight on rack/distribution/type of riding/threshold/whatever that makes this an issue for some and not for others or most or whatever.

But a Barcalounger on the back and risk of a crack of the rack would probably merit a regular inspection.

BTW- in case you missed it the metal brace (item 24 above) cracks at the red lines. I've seen this on another ST1100 (not mine though). The one I saw was broken all the way through and the tail plastic and rear luggage rack/top case were sagging pretty bad as a result. Welding a reinforcing bar along those side braces will strengthen and possibly prevent the issue.

Next time I have the taillight out I'll have to evaluate it. I could recreate it with 1/4" steel. I crushed the rear subframe on my KLR and duplicated it with sch120 9 chrome

That brace can be seen with just the seat removed if you just want to check it.
