U-Joint Experts? Suspected U-Joint Failing@152K

Guys...I have Steve from Wisconsin at my house (he came down for the GP) and was hearing/feeling a vibration in his bike friday on the way down. Saturday when we went to the track it got worse so we took it to the dealer to have them take a look. He just called me and said the dealer called and his U-joint is toast. They ordered a new one and should have it tomorrow and get him back on the road. He plans on going to Maine and Nova Scotia before returning home.

By the way, he has 48,000 miles on his 06 ST1300.

That's interesting... thanks for posting Landon.

OMG OMG OMG!!!! Here we go. Everyone panic.

Curt does a not of LD riding so lots and lots of hours on the drive train. Given that, I still think it's a premature failure however, the good news is for the rest of us I can see 250k miles before seeing this kind of issue given typical average riding..

I would expect just the opposite. Long distance riding would be easier on the drive train than a lot of on/off throttle usage as in riding twisties or stop & go traffic.

That's a good point.. doing wheelies every day would tend to be tougher on it or at least you would think so.

I was thinking for from the basic hours of operation point of view and just constant stress..

We romp on our bikes pretty hard sometimes... no me, I'm an angel :D ... So, I'm actually surprised this hasn't happened more.

The Wing guys get some twisted drive shafts from time to time... But even with their numbers I don't think it's all that common.

Hey Curt,

Have you ever had any problems with the Honda Extended Warranty covering something?

When I read my warranty it states that bikes used in competition won't be covered.

I'm just curious if Honda considers the IBA a "competition".... :)

<D>

2 out of how many??? Nah... not gonna panic. I think I still have better odds winning the lotto..

Mine needs replacement.... This could be similar to the BMW F's forks, seems like they happened closed to the same time...

Conspiracy!!!

:bigpop:

I've never had an issue with the warranty work but that is largely because of my dealer. Don't ask don't tell is their policy. I don't know what Honda would consider competition but this has been looked into and it is interpreted largely as racing. That's not what the IBR is so hopefully their opinion won't change.

That's what I would think, sponsored sanctioned racing... with the IBA there isn't any purse involved, just a bunch of guys going for a ride.

Oooops. Now I am embarrassed.

I am a Cowboy Comando, please feel free to panic without me....

Geesh..

Landon, which Steve from Wisconsin? I know Steve Schwan, STeve1300 but he has a 05 Red one. At least he won't have to wait several weeks to get a u-joint to the dealer for replacement. Curt must have primed the pump on this one!

Curt, should have asked you this at WiSToc.... When did you first notice the vibration or noise? Judging by the wear on that joint it seems like it had been doing that for awhile.

I was wondering which Steve also. I noticed it about 1000 miles or so before I took it in so I had quite a bit of warning I just couldn't figure out where it was coming from.

Oh sure, put me on the spot and ask me a last name....heck, I have a hard enough time with the first name. I will try to look it up or ask him when I get home from work and report back to you all.

Ok...I don't have a last name but I believe his handle is sundesj from Madison, Wisconsin.
