U-Joint Experts? Suspected U-Joint Failing@152K

Where is he staying??? You are not dropping him off each day at a Naked Women Dance Studio are you Landon?!?!?!

He is staying at Motel Landon right now. He has been in the grand guest suite since Friday night. If its not fixed by Thursday evening, I am afraid he will have to find other accomodations as I will be leaving for NatSTOC.

Update: The U-joint came in today and Steve is now probably somewhere in Ohio starting to finally enjoy his vacation. He just does not understand how lucky he really was to spend half his vacation with good ol' Landon.

That was great of you Landon. I'm sure he really appreciates it. I'm surprised that he was able to get one so quick seeing as how I had to wait 2.5 weeks for mine. I'm glad they were able to get it quickly though.

Landon should be nominated for a MOTM!

<D>

Thats not necessary. I didn't take him in thinking like that at all. I always try to put myself in their shoes, and I sure would have wanted someone to help me out. It already sucks bad enough your bikes in the shop broke, your missing your vacation you had been excited about for months, and then to have no one help you out in a time of need. I cannot imagine.

Who knows...someday I may need the same kind of help. And I hope someone is there to give me a hand.

Paying it forward.

I don't know where the U joint came from. When they told us it was backorder some were supposed to be released on 9/15/08. The honda shop called whoever they order from and told them they needed one for a customer that was on a trip stranded. So their status was urgent on the part and would be the first to go out. And I know Steve told them he would pay for the overnight to get it their fast, so that may have helped to.

OMG OMG OMG!!!! Here we go. Everyone panic.

Curt

Well... not panic, but 150K is fine, 50K IS NOT! I WILL get at least 100K on this bike, never expected ANY problems out of the final drive.

Here I've thought of getting those splines lubed periodically and it's the actual U-joint that's failing.:(

Ok,
I think I have the part/tools ready to start my u-joint replacement today! I'm going to video it, but I can't promise a good show.

Wish me luck...

Thanks,

Tom

Already a snag... spent an hour with video ( setup testing etc. ) only to find out that the camcorder needs/wants a cleaning tape. Which I don't have on hand. All the video I've done is nadda.

Oh well, I'll take pics... but it won't be the same...

Quick update. U-joint RR'ed. No test drive yet ( man my life is busy! ), I have pics, and I will start new thread soon.

Post your thread link here Tom so others can follow on... including me. :) Thanks.

My U-joint went out at 71k. I think mostly because son rides the bike hard.
The point is that it took almost 4k miles before it went out. I noticed a vibration at about 80 about 200 miles into a 4k ride. I nursed it the rest of the ride and it let go about 30 miles from home. You will get a lot of advanced notice in the form of vibration at speed.

Hey Cliff,

Thanks for the post. Just to let others know that was about the same experience for me. I had plenty of notice I just didn't know what it was. I would get a vibration at about 80mph and I rode it a couple thousand miles before I got it repaired.

I'll say my experience was different.

Mine had shown itself and like Curt I didn't know what it was. So for the 12k miles or so I addressed most everything I thought it could be - while still riding on it . CB's adjusted (a few times), checked front and rear wheel bearings - replaced front, synced TB's 2 times, checked and double checked valves - almost adjusted them, changed tires - had to anyway, and probably some other stuff.

It wasn't until Curt created this thread did I find the U-joint possibility.

Well, I'm done with the U-joint RR. Report to follow soon ( I finally have some time of my own :D ).
