Water pump fitment

Probably round about 2000, the UK police scrapped all their STs because they said they were inherently dangerous after at least 2 cops were killed after experiencing tank slappers and the investigators said it was the bikes fault whilst Honda UK said it was probably because of uneven weight distribution of police equipment.

That problem involved only the ST1300, not the 1100. Both officers were killed on 1300's. The 1300 appeared over there in 2002, we got it in 2003, so the accidents were post 2002. There are still some police 1100's in use in Britain and elsewhere, as you can sometimes notice them in news stories from across the pond.

Bush,
Thanks for that info———I’m glad it was the 1300s and not the 1100 (like mine) as I would hate to be on a tank slapper at any speed.
I’m sure I read the cops had them destroyed in such a way that they could never be ridden again but I wish I could have had an engine or two but you can guarantee that some of them went under the radar and didn’t get destroyed.
My only regret in owning my ST1100 is that I never joined a club/organisation (like this) to share experiences of all matters relating to the ST.
Fours years ago, I told El Wifo that I was gonna relive my youth and tour Europe again and so I bought an ST1100 over in the UK and travelled all over for 9 weeks but as good as the bike was, it could become a handful on some of the tiny roads.
I sold that ST and now own a V-Strom over there which I use for touring.

From what I have read, on the ST1300, it only happened at very speeds, too. Haven't heard of any similar problems with ST1300's over here. It may have been due to the extra police equipment installed, somehow.

A lot of ST1100's have a problem with headshake around 35 mph if you take your hands off the handlebars. Mine does it, but it's not really a problem - just keep hands on the bars. Some folks claim there are remedies to eliminate the headshake, but I haven't cured mine, yet. I don't consider it a serious problem. I can ride with my hands off the bars on the slab without any shaking at all.

Ditching the Avon tires cured mine. Someday I might replace the head bearings, but they feel fine.
Jim Van, Dean R,
Never had any handling problems and never had any tyre issues but over 19 yrs. of owning my ST I’ve had many brands of rubber but after trying them all, I’ve reverted back to the original Bridgestones (G547+G548) because I find they handle well in the rain and long life.

My '01 1100 has absolutely no tendency to wiggle at any speed that I have found, even when I try to start oscillations by sharply hitting one end of the handlebar. And I have the rear end raised up a bit to quicken the steering for better twisty riding.

Nowdays there are probably more US police departments than civilians riding STs. Honda stopped civilian production in 2012. I thought someone here posted the ST1300P production was stopped in 2016 but IDKFC. As police motors are phased out of service and sold and replaced by H-Ds and BMWs to civilian that ratio will change.

Larry Fine, Jim Van,
I can’t say I’ve experienced any handling issues with my ST but for almost as long as I can remember, vibration through the right handlebar( the twist grip) has been VERY troublesome to the extent that after perhaps 1hr. of riding I have to take my hand off the throttle for (depending on traffic etc.) my hand to recover from the vibes.
After an hour of riding, I HAVE to do this maybe every 15 mins. of riding.
The high frequency vibes can become almost painful and is the only fault that I find with my ST.

I have had two ST1100's and in my experience that is not normal. You should investigate to find the cause. Other then obvious things like incorrect installation, tightness of the bar, etc., my first thought would be is the bar end weight in place and the correct one.

Andrew Shadow, John,
The bars are totally standard and never been messed around with but what I would say is that the carbs could be the problem if they are out of sync because they have NEVER been touched from day1 of buying my ST, almost 20 yrs. ago.——-I feel a little embarrassed saying that but it has always run great so my philosophy is “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”
Whilst waiting for El Wifo to deliver my water pump repair parts (due Dec. 3rd) I have removed the front forks as the right fork was leaking and I have the necessary seals etc. (but not the bushings), is there anywhere on the forum that gives advice on fork overhaul?

Here's a really good video on the ST1100 forks...

And, here's a write-up I did when I did my ST1100 forks... http://www.st-riders.net/index.php?topic=9987.msg86774#msg86774

That was EXCELLENT!
Thanks a bunch for that.——-I’ve got the replacement seals etc. but I’ve ordered replacement bushings for both forks and they won’t arrive for a few days.
It was most fortunate that Delboy was doing an ST fork leg.
Again, many thanks.

John,—-and others
As an aside, I am kicking myself that after owning my ST1100 for nigh on 20yrs. and never had a chat with another ST owner, I finally meet some very helpful guys.

Wouldn't a vibration due to out of sync. carburetors cause a vibration that would be felt in both grips?
I would think that it would be worse in the left grip as it doesn't have a throttle tube acting as an isolator.

Andrew Shadow,
When I’ve repaired the water pump, rebuilt the front forks and then fitted seals in the brake calipers, I’ll take the bike to the Honda shop near me to have them synced.
After that lot, I’ll let you know!

Graham
