Boots Waterproof touring boots

A vote for Alpinestars. I originally bought a pair because they were cheap and didn't have all that flashy logo crap all over. You want to use my boots for advertising space? Pay up! I bought three more pairs over the years because they do everything well. Waterproof, come in warm weather and cold weather versions, good for walking, good grip. Why pay more?

Even bigger WOW!

They are definitely pricey (which is why I bought the 2nd pair very lightly used - still had tags on), but as I've gotten older my philosophy has migrated to buying the best gear I can afford and then keeping until it no longer functions correctly.

I expect 10 years from these boots. I'm in them 2 - 3months a year, they have more protection than the TCX boots and they are very comfortable to walk in. The VIBRAM sole can also be replaced.

Well it appears the TCX X-5 is basically out of production and you can only find small sizes like 9 and down. The Daytona’s are nice and what I’m looking for but at $500 it doesn’t make me happy. I was really hoping to max out around $300 or less.
Thank you all for the input.

I just clicked on the link on the post by @larryg. Took me to TCX website and size 10 is available with free shipping. My old boots are ready to fail so I took advantage of the info on this thread and ordered a pair. Thanks everyone!

Well that's disappointing. I saw those and thought they'd be worth looking into. My only boots are short over the ankle boots. Something a fair bit taller would be welcome. Waterproof is a perk but not a must. It it looks like rain it's time to stay inside and watch Monk DVDs.

TCX has been acquired by Dainese. I think some TCX models will be taken over by Dainese and will potentially change their name (and price?).

Generally speaking, if you don't necessarily choose all-leather boots, it is possible to pay much less.

I gave up on TM Solution waterproof membranes since that's not Gore-Tex.
I also bought AlpineStars Air Plus V2 Gore-Tex boots... Have worn them for the last 7.5 years in ALL kinds of weather. Just after buying them someone cut me off as I was coming out of a parking lot and I layed down the bike causing a bit of damage to the outer layer on the side of the boot about the size of my thumb nail. Did NOT affect the waterproof feature since the Gore-Tex is the inner layer which was not damaged. Have since worn them in some very severe torrential rain storms and have never had wet feet. I've also worn these boots in the coldest ride game in temps down to -11*F at least and still was warm enough to ride with an extra pair of socks also being worn... as it should be for cold riding... in spite of these being "AIR" boots. I haven't found temps too cold to ride in with these, nor too hot to ride in with these. They did cost about $100 less 8 years ago though but that's what has happened to everything. I'd buy again in a heartbeat.

i ran into this too, on first look my size (11) was out of stock. But I saw that if you leave TCX your email, they will notify you when your size is available.
So I did that, and within about a week I got an email from them, and put in my order.

What about treating boots that stop being waterproof with silicone tent spray? :eek1:

BTW- BTDT... didnt' work so well.

I use a used crush washer to rub a combo of Mobil One and whale blubber to waterproof my boots. Buff with a Costco yellow microfiber towel to a high gloss. Ready for rain and inspection. But if it looks like rain...

Just buy some Never Wet - this stuff is amazing. I sprayed a pair of boots over a year ago on my back patio. Now whenever it rains or I wash off the stone, there are two perfectly shaped shoe prints where I set the shoes down to spray them.

I have a few spots like that on the front walk.

When I was working I'd typically ride the bike for the commute unless there was slippery stuff on the roads... then I'd take the bus (free for military retired personnel). But rain never stopped me from riding the bike to work unless the temps were very near or below freezing (yes, it does sometimes come down as rain at freezing temps)... even if it was raining to start the commute. Now that I'm not working I generally avoid starting a ride in the rain. But I don't generally avoid riding just because it might rain later. That's what a good rain suit is for... and waterproof gloves... and waterproof boots.

I actually stopped wearing waterproof boots several years ago and just wear boot covers if I'm really interested in keeping my feet dry on really long trips.
Living in Florida I get rained on probably half of the days I ride and in my experience, waterproof boots have been waterproof in both directions, so my feet sit in little puddles until I get a chance to get out of my gear. Water always finds a way to get into my boots no matter what my outlet layers are.
Now I wear perforated boots during my commutes and short trips so no more puddles form in my boots and the engine heat and wind will mostly dry out my feet after I get past the rain.
