Which Aftermarket Oil Filter?

kz1100

Hey all, I have a question about filters. I'm sorry about this, as I'm sure this has been discussed thousands of times, but I can't seem to find past posts about the subject. I would like to know which after market filters fit my 2004 ST13? I'm in Canada, so Canadian Tire carries many of these filters, all of which are quite a bit cheaper than from the dealer. This is my first year with the ST, although I have been biking for about 40 years. Over this time I have decided that oil type is not as important as frequency of change-out. 3500 kms, and out you go, always with a new filter. No need for expensive synthetics, just a good grade of dino-juice. So which brand and model number filter is recommended for big blue? Opinions about oil? Thanks for any and all input.

What, no dissing? Youse guys are falling down on the job.

(I use the cheapest one I can find so you'll get no negatives from me. :D)

Side question: don't the 1100 and 1300 use the same filter?

I go on ebay and try to find the K&N 204 under $10 (including shipping) and then buy about 5 to 10 at a time. (I go through five or six in a year.)

ebay K&N 204 Oil Filter

I buy the K&N because they are super easy to remove.

According to calsci they're both group 5.
pl14610 is the longer than stock one fits fine on the 1300.

20 x 1.5mm threads,
14-18 psi by-pass valve,
anti-drain back valve,
2.3" O.D. gasket
2.5" to 3.5" long.

the puro "motor cycle" filter
9-12 psi by-pass

Mobil 1 -- M1-110 filter. Same as used on the Honda 4-cylinder engine, such as in the Element and CR-V. I prefer it to the OEM filter for the ST1300. It's a little longer, but fits comfortably. I switch it out easily without taking off any lower cowling.

+ 1 0n the PL14610 or 14612. If you register online at Advance Auto parts, you can routinely get these for 15% off.

does anyone know the spec on the oem filter by-pass valve

Good question. An aftermarket filter with too high a pressure spec might not bypass the filter, or at least not as soon as it should. Too low a pressure spec and it will bypass the filter too soon.

So I'd think you'd want a filter that filters well and comes as close as possible to the factory spec.

Hi Lyle...Won't be going to onstoc, thanks anyway. From the info everyone has given me, I will be able to pick up something appropriate at the local crappy tire. Thanks to all.

I have one rule on oil filters.
NO FRAM.
other than that I will use most anything.
Used to sell filters, and Fram is the cheapest made filter there is. The cheapest filter we sold was simply a fram painted yellow. The difference was one was $1.25 and the other was $3.50
Here is an odd thing:
Mobil = Purolator (makes Group7 used to make Quaker State, Mopar, may be doing Pennzoil now)
Mobil1=Champion Labs (makes AC Delco, STP, Bosch, Warner, Tech2000 and others .. I find more and more of the "cheap" lines are ChampLabs)
So a regular Mobil is a Purolator and a Mobil1 is a ChampLabs but it has a higher priced check valve set up and gasket.
In the USA there are only 4 companies making filters. Fram (spit), Wix (overpriced, but well built) Champion Labs (in race applications they are slightly more restrictive, but I use them often on my stuff, they are fine on the road), and Purolator. Motorcraft filters (I wish they had an application that fit my stuff!) are made by all 4 but to Ford's specs so a Fram built one is exactly like one made by Purolator (who makes most of them) and Champ Labs (who makes the next largest amount for Ford). I have seen Toyota filters made in the US as well, but I have no idea who makes them. Again I wish they fit my stuff. Toyota gets more paper in a filter for its size and it is very good stuff. Of all the above I rate them (best to worst) Toyota, Motorcraft, Purolator, Champ Labs, Wix, and lastest and leastest, by far the worstest evar!!1! ... Fram.
I left out the Pure One and Mobil1, though they are good, the added price means I end up going with a regular filter most of the time, unless they are on sale and not much more than the regular Puro.. Otherwise I rank them about equal with a standard Purolator.

Regarding oil filter selection does anyone have oil or oil filter related engine damage or failure anymore? I mean anyone that changes oil on time? Reason being I've run a couple Hondas to over 220,00 miles and counting and more often than not used Fram oil filters. One to 187k before it was totaled.,They don't burn oil between changes and run great. I am sure there are differences between brands but does it really matter with regular oil and filter changes?

An old saw: When good enough is good enough, then good enough is perfect.

I have and will use Fram. They had some problems years ago in race condition, turns out the problem filters were made in Korea or some where like that and the threads in the hole were "loose" letting the filter fly off under pressure.

I'm with dduelin. Many, many miles on many, many bikes with no apparent problems due to oil and/or filters. Y'all know I'm not strict with my changes (Both STs could probably use a change now with ~11,000 miles since the last change on STick and 14,000 on lipSTick. I'll use whatever filters are on the shelf, no Frams just now could be. STick is well over 200,000 and lipSTick is over 180,000. I figure with my loooooooong intervals, I've saved enuff on oil and filters (compared to some folks 2 or 3 thou changes) to swap out an engine if I need to. Both use a little oil now but not enuff to worry about. And I have a spare motor setting on the floor. :D

All my opinion, of course, and no intent to diss anyone's view. Do as you please and let me do the same.

The order is in , but back order for a week or two. When I get them I'll let you know all about them. I would maybe try a Napa store and make sure you are buying motorcycle oil.

Lyle,

What brand of oil filters are you ordering?

I've been using Amsoil filters since bike was new (2003 ST13000).
Amsoil is expensive but I've had no problems.

I change my oil once a year (20,00 km)...when I put bike away for storage in the fall.
I now have 180,000 Km on the clock and sh'es never burnt a drop of oil.

I can't recall the name off hand. Work uses them all the time and all filters meet the oem spes. for warranty. Work uses them for the cars, trucks small engines, 4 wheelers, sorry we don't have motorbikes but if we did they would use this brand on them to. The mechanic uses them on his gold wing with over 200.000 kms and I think my price is $6.00. I work in Property services not Fleet and I just asked the question on filters. But I had to order a case of 10-12. Ive never herd of engine failure because a filter if you change your oil regularly. See the US is different, what is a box mart? 3.50 thats crazy cheep and is there any in Buffalo or is this a southern thing. Matt
