Riddle me this Batman???

In my quest for a set of tyres to replace my current Dunlop Roadsmarts I've noticed that the Avon STorm is a popular tyre on this forum with ST1300 riders.

However, it appears that the maunfacturer does not recommend the use of Avon tyres on the ST1300. Why is this so????

A lot of my riding is two up. Should I be looking at another tyre? Any recommendations from two up pilots?

Thanks,

Tony

The ST1300 can at times exhibit a weave at high speeds and Avon was spooked by the death of a British motor officer on a police 1300 that was equipped with Avon Azaro tires. That is my opinion anyway. Myself I like the Storms and ran about 40,000 miles on them but my riding is solo.

I would like to read the Coroners Report regarding that accident. I didn't realise they were running an avon tyre but I had read that one of the attributing factors was tyre wall flex.

Yep....looks like its back to a set of Bridgestone 020's. All my research seem to point to them as being the better two up tyre. I just wish I could get as much life out of the front 020 as I do the rear!

The Storms are making a FAN out of me....

1 up or 2up....Unless you plan on going trippe digits with a passenger, (which I would NEVER do) the data has NO relavence to me.....
I've been running Storms for the last 7,000 miles and they have been great...

I have run PR 1's (4 sets and my all time favorite)..PR2's (yuck) and the OEMs...Blah...I will run Storm 1s again!

Storms (1s) are great. I've ridden two up pulling a trailer up to 150kph with no problems. You only get 8K ~ 10K Kilometers out of them though. They stick like glue in all conditions...

I just put on my third set of Ultra 2's and love them I ride 2 up about 30-40% of the time. They are a good tire. I will not hesitate to use them again. I put new ones on last night in preparation for a 5000 mile trip to Utah and back.

Thanks for the feedback on the Avon STorm.

When I looked further into Avon's website I found that the new Ultra 2 was recommended for most heavy weight sport tourers including the GTR1400, K1300GT & R1200RT, FJR1300 and even the ST1100. All these bikes are purpose built to cover long distances, two up and with luggage. The tyre ratings for these bikes are mostly identical to the ST1300's as well.

It would be interesting to get an official slant from Avon as to why they wont endorse their tyres on the ST1300.

I contacted them way back when this came up with the Azaro's and was told they just do not rate them for exessive speeds. That if you keep the bike below Autobahn speeds you will be fine. With the speed limits over here we seem to have no problems with the tires.

I read a lot of stuff here in the forums about some front wheel wobble specifically on the ST1100. Not sure if it was the first generation of Avon or not. I have a Michelin PR2 on the front which is miles above the Battleax BT021.

Avon Ultra 2 on the rear. Not sure what I will use on the front again (another PR2 or a new STorm)??

Did you ever try the PR2's? What's better with the storms?
Todd wear of the 2 compound? tire life? Not sticky enough?

I just ordered a pair of Avon Storm 2 Ultra's (PR2's for the ST13 front are backordered by two weeks). I plan on leaving directly on a coast-to-coast trip. I'll let you know how the are (were?) when I get back in August.

I like them... just put a 100 miles on them today... aint much, but I likey them :)

They are very neutral going into corners... they don't fall in like the PR2's, but they only do what you want them to... stand up easy... pretty sticky so far... don't track on rain grooves or tar snakes so far... :bow1:

Sounds like everything that I'm looking for in a tire. Can't wait!

OK... maybe it's just me. :shrug1:

I find that these Storms are a bit squigly on tar snakes when it's wet outside... didn't have that feeling on the PR2's.

Anyone else have the same feeling

What is this "wetness" you speak of?

I have approx 350 mi on my first try on the Storm 2's, nothing but Z6's for the first 55,000 miles. Neutral to say the least, huge diff with the Z6's. The Storm 2's are not confidence inspiring to me, they seem to want to ride on the harder, centre compound. I have to use more thought and effort when cornering with the Storm 2's. I never had a wear issue with the Z6's, always got 10-12,000 miles (1 up, 155 lbs). Thought the dual compound would be better suited for travel to Puttstoc may reconsider that thought in 5,000 miles.

I hear you on the confidence thing... I'm a bit leary now when the roads are wet and I see tar snakes or stripes now... guess I'll have to play it easy :

I really loved my Cobra's and Venom's on the Wing... good sticky tires in the wet :)
