How many balls is optimal for dash shelf?

I don't think it would have to be hollow at all though it would help. A hole drilled horizontally on either side of the center ball and an intersecting hole drilled vertically and Bob's the sketchy uncle. Maybe shallow grooves along the bottom of the shelf to route the wires.

I've got some 5mm '12V' LEDs just for such an occasion. Not to get carried away but 2-3 holes per side look to be doable.

revision update: Made two cut outs to eliminate obstruction in viewing the turn signal indicator lamps on the dash. Thanks!

As an observation based on the above pictures it looks like it would obstruct visibility of the turn signal indicator lamps even without any device mounted.
