5 years ago I bought a DD’d St1300. I rode a few thousand miles and was happy to get on stock tires.
However, I have an 8000-10,000 highway mile ride in the works for August, a 2000 mile ride next week, and thought of blowing through the cost of stock tires and time changing them has sent me the the darkside for a bit.
Add to these rides that I found out I can go to Reno Air races in September for another 5000 miles and it could be a record high mileage year for me.

On eBay I scored a BFGoodrich g-force comp 2 AS with 1/64” wear for $60. Surely this would be an old tire at that price with practically no wear right, 4/22 build date. Sweet deal.
For up front I ordered a new BT46.
They took a lot more work than expected.
The g-force rubbed the swing arm enough to put a little drag on the tire. A slight amount of grinding on swing arm and a little bit on tire. I inflated to 45 pounds to mock up for a hot tire and was still clear.
I seem to be good to go.
The front tire was harder. I have a fender extender. There was heavy rubbing where the shoulder hit extender. Also there was rubbing on both sides of the rear portion of the fender. Just enough to clean the dirt off. The hand held grinder took care of trimming the inside of the extender. A bench grinder came in handy for the tire. I just spun the tire by the grinder.

Eventually I achieved the ever so slightest rub and called it good enough for a shake down ride. Then I inflated the tire and had clearance.
Again I figure that I am good to go.
A 10 mile test went fine, might ride 50 tomorrow.
Any thoughts from some DD riders on such close clearances?

I had the same problem on the front, I just let friction solve the last bits. Riding in gravel or mud was a problem with no clearance though, cracked fender, scored tire, nothing is a perfect solution. Ride, enjoy the trip, post pictures.

It must be the new BT46 is a bit wider then the BT45 was, never had the 45 tire rub like the 46 tire. I just installed my first BT46 and found the same rubbing as you with the fender extender. I just got back from a 6600 mile ride with this new tire and in the back it cracked the fender where the extender is glued on and a large chunk is missing. I am replacing my front fender and will not install a extender.

Have a great ride!

Are there any concerns with only darksiding the rear tire only and leaving the front alone? Besides the obvious shorter life span.

Yes lots of concerns. You are a test rider if you install a car tire on a bike rim. You could die.

Really lots of concerns. Don't do it unless you are 100% sure you want to do that.

Usually it works fine either way but it may not some day.

Any different tire will effect how the bike handles no matter what is mounted on the back. Lots of sport tires vs. plain tire out there.

Thanks :) I knew the other concerns of putting a CT where a MT should be. I was really just inquiring about the CT by itself and not putting a rear MC tire on the front.

I too have been debating darksiding as the MC tire industry doesn't make a rear tire that surpasses the minimum load rating the 1300 requires.

The BT46 is a bit wider. The best you can hope for is a credit card worth of clearance.

The bridgestone DriveGuard RF car tire clears the swing arm just fine. The Pirelli Centauro needs grinding.

is there room for a for a taller tire? They make a 120/80 18 in a bt46. .7 narrower but >7 taller. It has more load capasity than the stock size

I'm following ALL these DS threads... I will MOT take a grinder to my swingaram.
But I want to eat my cake and have it, too... I want a car tire.
With no grinding.

My thoughts would be, it would be very close inside the fender and probably rub on the OD more than a 130-70-18. For sure stones or pebbles would stick in the tread and be carried around on the inside of the fender. This happens on my 130-70 tire.

Stock 120-70-18 tire works out to 24.614" tall.
Other 130-70-18 tire works out to 25.165" tall.
Other 120-80-18 tire works out to 25.559" tall.

Of course the radius from the axle to tire edge is half the above.

Mount one and try it and let us know how it works.

From what I've been following the BF Goodrich G Force comp2 A/S plus doesn't require grinding. @spiderman302 & @970mike run these.

This is the tire I'm leaning to as my 1st pick.

The Hankook Ventus v12 EVO2 k120 needs swingarm grinding. @Baird44 uses this on the rear and Battlax bt46 on front for a double darkside.

There are multiple v12 videos if you haven't seen them:

I can't speak about the Hankook k104 or k110.

General Gmax AS-03 needs grinding.

All of these tires are supposedly 205mm in width.

I have never tried one that size.

I wish that they still made the Michelin Pilot Active that tire wore like iron, handled well and never rubbed.

I rode 320 miles today. Still not a dark fan in the corners, it’s ok but wow talk about the magic carpet ride on the freeway. I do have upgraded suspension. The combination is great.
Currently running 40 psi up front and 30 psi in the rear.
I might keep this bike set up this way since my silver bike is set up for the twisties.

Try 26 PSI in the rear tire.

I’ve mentioned it before on different threads here, the CT I use is a Pirelli P7 Centuron, and it has a full 1/4“ space between the swingarm and the tire. So no grinding, or other tricks to get it in there. It goes 25-30k miles under fairly hard riding. I run 28 psi in it and 30 when fully loaded. On my 3rd one now. And the Michelin PR series on the front, the recommended size. I tried the Hankook as my first DS, it only went 18k, and it had a really soft sidewall, causing it to ‘wiggle‘ when you change throttle position while in a curve. I also tried (forget the size and brand) rear bias ply on the front of my ST, didn’t like it at all, terrible in the rain, and bc it was taller it picked up rocks and other debris and rolled between the fender, cracking my fender. Took it off about half used. IMG_2069.jpegIMG_2065.jpeg

I’ll try to wear out the BFG as soon as possible. P7 would be next.
This BFG does feel better in turns then the wiggly Hankook.

I went ahead and got a Bridgestone BT46 in the 120/80/18 and mounted it on my spare rim and like the fit way better then a BT46 130/70/18.

It mounts almost like the stock size 120/70/18 with lots of clearance around the front fender.

The 130/70/18 BT46 is 3/4" wider then my old Michelin Pilot Active 130/70/18 which is why that tire is not a good fit for the Honda ST1300.

Is the tread depth similar to 130?
