Just bought 2006 ST1300PA! :)

Hi everyone, just bought ST1300PA with just 18K-miles on clock. Had been sitting at dealer and never sold to PD. Immediately took it on 300-mile up to Yarnell today. Lots of fun and it handled twisties awesomely. Looking forward to learning more about this bike! :thumb:

Hello fellow newbie! Nice score I love some of the stories about leftovers and bikes that got forgotten about! Good luck with the new scoot!

I wouldn't go that route. The room that the insulation uses reduces the cargo space available. Much easier to get a good quality soft-sided cooler that you can throw in whenever you want it. When it is empty it take much less room than a rigid cooler. When you aren't using it you still have the full volume of the saddlebag available.

Some reading for you;
Maintenance Items Needed for a New (old) Bike
Thanks! :)

My wife has some of those large insulated cooler bags for our nephew's foodball games. Will try them out next time. Should work out better to capture melted ice and not have water dripping all over back end!

I'll review maintenance list. Had good talk with Larry this morning and I'll tackle these items 1st:

- fork & wheel alignment, check out headset and wheel-bearings while I'm at it

- replace worn-out brake pads with new OEM. Bleed in new fluid and test SMC while at it.

- replace clutch fluid

- replace fork oil, and seals if needed.

Not believer in locking everything up with stiffness. I firmly believe in letting suspension move to do it's job. It should use up all travel on biggest bump you'll hit. Will turn down damping on rear as it's stiffer than front at moment.

Then it may be safe enough for trip down to see him! :)

Some background info on me while we're here. I started riding at 13-yr old on RM80 in friend's backyard. That was so much fun, I couldn't wait to get driver's licence and get road bike! But my mum wouldn't allow any such nonsense, so I had to wait until I moved out for university.

My 1st bike, bought in 1986! Wanted VFR750F, but couldn't afford it at time, so got baby brother VF500F Interceptor! :)

Being 1st street bike, it was learning experience for everything! Riding & crashing, maintenance, repairs & upgrades. It was pristine for all of 5-minutes, then I stalled and dumped it trying to get out of uphill driveway out of seller's house. It was really steep driveway, I swear!!! ;)

I wasn't used to so much weight! So I just went back to riding dirt, gave it tonne of throttle and wheelied outta there! That's more like it!!!

Then punk teenager that I was, never realised it needed more maintenance than car! Let it sit too long over winter-break next to ocean and it rusted up solid and carbs clogged. Ended up running lean on one cylinder, melted and seized piston and tossed rod out side of block!

Got spare older-gen engine from breakers with damaged head/chocolate cams and mixed & matched parts to build one good engine!

Took opportunity to completely strip down to bare frame and paint it black. Along with recovering ripped seat in crash couple years later, it looks much more coordinated. Less Fisher-Price or Tonka-toy and more like serious bike. For reference, here's original colour scheme.

Still have this bike today! Will probably keep it forever. We've done so many road-trips together up & down PCH between Santa Barbara and SF Bay Area! :)

I think my next step with it is upgrading wheels to wider CBR600F2 wheels in order use modern 17" tyres. Then take it out and wring its neck on track!

Thanks for welcome!

I actually didn't buy from dealer, but mechanic who works for them. He's been using as commuter. Still have single-seat cowl in box that was never installed. Along with shotgun holder, and rear-rack/crash-bar. I take it these are items that's not installed at factory but are done by dealers before delivery to PD?

All wiring for sirens, flasher lights, radio are still intact since that stuff was never installed. Also connectors not chopped off like ex-PD bikes.

I also got box with original mufflers. Gonna put OEM mufflers back on 1st. Don't really like loud exhausts (even on my racebikes), gives me headaches on long rides, even with earplugs.

I'm actually more interested in insulating saddlebags better. Tried bringing some cold drinks along for ride in 111F weather. Unfortunately, ice-cubes didn't last long. ahahahhah...

I've seen some with black crash bars. Is that from someone just removing them and painting?

Danno....You're missing out. I have an Igloo cooler that remains ice cold all day during the CA summers. It fits perfectly in pannier. Yep, I'm bragging :)

Welcome from Texas
Love the white ST's
I picked up a top box off Amazon for $90, WAY better than I expected, I can put a cooler in it and keep drinks cold even on a Texas day20220818_123447.jpg

Hi, can you show me photo? Is this off-the-shelf cooler I can pick up anywhere? THx

Just for grins, check the title/registration to see how many prior owners it’s had.
It’s common wording in some areas to advertise a bike as never put in police use, never used on patrol, was only used as a parade escort, was the chiefs bike, etc.
And there is one type of ST1300 that met all this advertising….a crash test dummy, police training bike! The also ever installed lights and such etc.
You will want to check carefully under the Tupperware, OEM crash bars, threads in the frame that held crash bars for damage etc.
Check the rims carefully for dents and or flat spots too.
Also check handlebars for excessive handlebar flex from damaged grommets in the upper triple tree from the way they pick their bikes up when throwing them down doing cone training etc.
Not saying yours is one, just pointing out how to verify if it was one.

welcome from Tucson. you are a brave man riding in yesterdays heat. my ST is in the garage on battery tender until cooler temps. glad you enjoy the bike.

Thanks, I was born on equator, so I'm use to heat! :) ... and humidity!!

Yup, confirmed buying from 1st owner. I used original title issued to mechanic from dealer at purchase in 2008 to transfer ownership to me! Also got P-model sub-frame with extra mounting tabs for seat-cowl and radio-box. Not a mark on it, definitely never put into service.

I'll add handlebars & triple-T check when doing fork & axle alignment (gonna remove handlebar spacer). Dave Moss really helped me with so many set-up issues decades ago when I started racing with AFM. :) This video helped me with shaking under braking on my CBR600RR. Had replaced everything and was about to sell it and get another track bike. Turned out I had skipped some steps and done them out-of-order.

Thx! :wine2:

Belated congratulations on your new to you ride! I've always liked a white ST. It seems you got the best possible buy – a non-former motor with wiring harness(es) intact and P bits to boot. As I'm a solo rider I'd prefer the cop box modified for storage space and installed. Maybe it could hide an amp for the electronic air horn. :D The cop switch pods allow for all manner of electrical farkles.

I suppose I could buy the white version of Tup but that would be pricey assuming all the white bits are still available. During the last years of STP production the color scheme was changed to black and white instead of all white like yours. Custom paint might be cheaper but still pricey. So I'm envious of your acquisition.
