Where was it parked up?
In the ocean!
No the exhaust wasn't stainless originally. They rotted away pretty quick.
Nice work on the swingarm.

Thanks @ Upt' North.
I wonder if anyone can help - I need dimensions for the little piece rotted away as you can see in the picture below. 2X pictures further below show what it is supposed to look like. Would anyone for a frame sripped that they could easily measure or have a dimension on a drawing for this?

I happen to have an ST1100 frame in my 'waiting to go to the scrapyard pile' so I hope this helps. I'd offer you the frame if you were a wee bit closer but I could cut off this part and see what postage/time frame would be if you thought that would be helpful.

Well, the corrosion seems endless but I am past the worst of it now. Even the tank which I thought was fine but when I removed soon discovered had multiple pin holes from external corrosion. Rad really corroded, temporary repair effected but new one required in time. Even the RHS front brake rotor is toast due to corrosion as the out lip of the piston cyclinder is partly gone in one pot. Rebuilding in full swing though with all paint work completed, timing belt replaced, front/rear brake calipers rebuilt, front/rear master brake cyclinders along with clutch master/slave (see picture below) rebuilt, new wheel bearings front/rear. Headset was perfect amazingly. Valve clearances checked - all good. Forks fully rebuilt, 2nd hand rear shock sourced. 40 amp alternator in hand along with the necessary parts for the upgrade - just waiting on the adapter plate from John Clark on here. Final drive checked - all good, o-rings & oil seal replaced. Saddle currently at the upholsterer. Hopefully it will be completed in a few weeks. I will revisit to change water hoses (they seem fine but just in case) and overhaul carbs but want to ride it a bit first to make sure there are no other problems - engine/gearbox. A few pictures below of the horror for your entertainment :). you will notice on the headlights that the metal brackets are corroded. I have removed and made good but the time that even small pieces like these takes really adds up and makes progress very slow. / /
The windscreen is really weathered/fogged (can't think of the word I'm looking for) but I wonder if treated like this guy restores headlights - would it work? Have a look and let me know if anyone has tried.

Hello gang!
Well 2 months on and I'm almost finished. I fitted the 40 amp alt. and am wondering what the black socket is for, see below which is the way I think it should be wired. I removed the VRR and fitted the OEM fuse.

The black lead from the new alt harness with the 2P on the end plugs into the female 2P plug from the old harness wiring loom. During the upgrade the white lead in this plug is clipped. This mounts on a tab on the frame (you probably removed the connection during the upgrade).

Well, one more ST1100 rescued from certain death . Started and driven today. First time riding one and I’m hooked, as Jeremy Clarkson would say - what a machine! Thanks everyone for your help. The information here is brilliant. I’ll post a few pictures when she’s fully dressed.IMG_1156.jpeg

Wow, congratulations on getting it roadworthy once more. Wasn’t sure you’d get it done or this soon. Wishing you many miles and adventures ahead!

Anyone know what month/year this bike is? I’m thinking it must be early model. UK bike originally. I spent hours on Google & fourums but most info for 1991. How to decode this VIN?

€600 paid so not the end of the world. Maybe another €700/€800 to bring her back from the brink? I will keep an account of every cent spent and let ye know. I have the side cases but one is badly damaged. I'm not doing a nut & bolt resto - just enough. I won't be sandblasting and powder coating the frame for example. Wirebrush, corrosion treatment & paint will do perfectly fine. But it will be mechanically perfect, no expense spared there. I love leaving the scars on the old bikes, gives 'em a bit of character - like myself :). Thanks for the tip on the alternator.
Job done and as promised, see costs below.

Well done to you, that looks like a lot of work that was properly and methodically carried out, and a great result. You have a great advantage over many motorcyclists now (particularly the newer younger ones with plenty of money), you know every nut and bolt on it, what it does, how it does it, and if something crops you will be able to deal with it. Did you rough up the number of hours it took?

Thanks very much, you summed up my thoughts perfectly. I could have just bought a bike in good working order for about the same money but would undoubtedly have to do some work on it. At least now I know exactly what I have, how it works and how it all goes together. That’s a huge part of the motorcycling hobby for me. Plus an early model Pan has been saved from the scrap heap.
I grew up in a busy garage helping my Mechanic Dad and have been riding and tinkering with bikes since I was a teenager. He is 85 years old now and to see his joy with the ‘preservation’ of this machine is something special - skills learned from him and he knows it.
