I read an article regarding a couple recalls affecting several Yamaha models (including Super Tenere, FJR1300) that owners should be getting notified about soon. One involves a faulty front brake switch that could prevent the brake light from operating and the cruise control from disengaging. The other is for a bad transmission gear that could break causing the rear wheel to lock up :eek1:. Yamaha is recommending you refrain from riding the affected models until the repair is performed.

Here is the NHTSA link with the info: 2016 Yamaha FJR1300 recall. Though this link is for 2016, the recalls affect models from 2013 on. Specifics about years and models are available at the link.

Here is the Transport Canada Recall Details re the brake switch issue. Its lists all the models impacted. I think U.S models would be the same ones.

You can search by VIN on the U.S. site to see if your bike is impacted by the switch issue or the gear one.

The brake switch is a fairly well known issue on FJR's for on occasion not being able to engage cruise control, as the brake switch is designed to disengage cruise whenever you hit the brakes. The fix we use is to spray contact cleaner into the switch to ensure no dirt prevents the little plunger from returning fully. I thought perhaps they were going to put in a stronger spring, but apparently they are saying it's some kind of contact corrosion. Either way, they used this same switch on many Yamahas.
The transmission thing is concerning with the 6 speed FJR's 2016-up. The second gear can break, and is being replaced with a forged gear instead of the original cast gear. There are no inidividual service gears, so the entire transmission gear cassettes are being replaced. It is not clear how many are affected. The US recall was last to be announced, give it a couple of weeks to have all the VIN's populated in the database as it is early (due January 15th).

A sudden drivetrain lockup ? Your butt would be a-biting the seat on that one !
Would be even worse than when the ChatterBox Theft Module turned my ST's ignition -- OFF on I-80 in 2015 , at least the rear wheel was rolling .

Nothing for US yet on the gearbox issue, so I will continue to ride my 2016 FJR as much a weather allows (which is not much). As far as I understand, the risk is very small, but will of course get it fixed if/when the recall is extended to US

From what I get out of this article, it was issued by the NHTSA and therefore is the US? I also see that Yamaha will contact those effected, but to me I would be at my dealerships door asking, and getting it fixed if needed during the low ride season.

Similar to the rear brake locking up on my ST 1300 a couple years ago I suppose. That was fun!

I have a 2015 Super Tenere and a 2019 Tracer 900 GT that were both purchased used and fall in the range of the recalls. I stopped by my Yamaha dealer today and he ran both VINs through the Yamaha system only to find neither bike shows up on the the recall.........as both motorcycles were purchased used, the notice would not go to me.

The S10 falls in the range of recall for the stopper lever for the transmission......not shown. The Tracer shows the recall for the front brake switch.....not shown either and the dealer said he will check again in a week or so. I just serviced the brake/clutch pivot points with a clean and grease, but did not spray the safety/brake switches with contact cleaner-----will do tonight!

The transmission recall is for 2016 and up, when the FJR went to a six speed. 2013-2015 are 5 speeds.

I don't think dropping it off at the dealer now would not do any good. Because they are going to have to see from Yamaha instructions on how to perform the recall campaign. Then wait for the updated parts from Yamaha. It would amaze me if Yamaha dealers had these update parts.
