Setting Up A Chinavasion Rage GPS

I haven't heard anything on shipping of my 5" order! I'm jealous. :confused:
However they did take my money already though!

Pieterv - As Paul asked, do you have the Rage or the new 5" unit? If you got it from Chinavasion, the product number would tell. Or a picture would also. The 5" has a much better 'sun hood' on it. I made my covers from a plastic homework notebook and some industrial Velcro - very inexpensive. You can make them as 'deep' as you like. I did this for the Rage units - so far I've not needed one on the 5" unit -

Hi Phil,

Thanks for the pics. It is the 5", which indeed comes with a sizable hood. I think it might be more accurate to say that the problem is as much reflections as glare (i.e. under certain lighting conditions is see myself!), so a hood wouldn't work against that, but the anti-glare film helps for it, but introduces more glare under certain lighting.

"It" is 2nd Gen 8MB, had it run off SD, now on internal memory. I didn't use iGo8 for long, but liked the screen layout on Primo better. The mc update I couldn't get to work but use the skin it is based on which gives some of the options (but not the routing improvements).

Thanks for clarifying Pieter. I would assume yours has 128MB RAM?

Sorry for all the questions, but they stem from my inability to identify specs from Chinavasion. I believe mine has 128MB but have asked Chinavasion to verify.
 
So you do have Primo 2.4 running on the Gen2 5" unit. Could you post a picture of the unit just for grins and what the Primo main menu looks like? I'd be curious as how it compares to the MC version I have. Thanks.
 
Suggestions on where to get Primo 2.4? gpsmapstore.com? Others?

UP - your guy only seems to have iGO8.
 
Pieterv - Thanks. That helps me 'see' some of the differences the MC mod brings to the table.

Paul - I would definitely go for the Primo since Pieterv has it working. Obviously 'stock' Primo has the 800X480 resolution built in. You should be able to go back and add the MC mods (but it must be Primo 2.4 edition) when Mark gets 800X480 resolution developed.

That's my plan. I saw this Primo on ebay... look right?
 
I've been contacting the ebay seller to verify the info. I'm generally very little hesitant with ebay but am considering it for this.
 
Hi Guys, has anyone tried loading memory map onto the 5" version without any problems, as it seems there are a lot of problems breaking into the rage unit.

I don't quite understand the question - Are you talking about a software program or a microsd card or something else? If you are talking about 'hacking' the unit to get to the WinCe beneath, I've done that once on the 5".
 
Thanks for reply, i understand a few people run this...http://www.memory-map.co.uk/2015-os-landranger-1-50-000-complete-gb, along with the sat nav igo 8, primo or similar, and apparently it just installs simply on the old peaklife as opposed to not simply installing on the rage.

I have read through various posts of how to get REGEDIT and the keyboard etc, and dont know if all this has to be done on the 5" to run memory map as needs to be done (apparently) on the rage.
There are some conflicting views here about the rage, http://www.xrv.org.uk/forums/product-reviews/103290-gps-motorcycle-2.html.( don't know if i am clear about what i am asking)
 
Oh, so it is an GB option in place of or in addition to IGO8 or PRIMO GPS software if I read the page correctly. My hunch is the problem is that the old Peaklife uses WINCE5 and the Rage and newer versions use WINCE6 as the base operating system. I couldn't find on the page as to what specific versions of what PC OSs it runs on. If it is just a matter of 'turning on' access to the OS, I've done it on the 5". HOWEVER, if you mess the hack up, your GPS turns into a useless brick without much hope of fixing it. ;-) Is it supposed to be 'better' maps than PRIMO or IGO8? Just curious.
 
Thanks for that uncle phil. It is an addition, and the Ordnance Survey maps over here show " Legal? off road tracks and trails" as well as footpaths, bridle ways etc. ( all roads are also shown, but is to work out a route on the computer and download this to GPS/sat nav) so that you can link these up with the tarmac roads.
