They Killed my ST-1300

I’m glad you're following up by going and getting checked out, and that you are able to do so. Geeze thats a hard looking hit.

Today the headache from my concussion is reduced --not gone but better than it was yesterday

On the other hand, I'm feeling a ligament damage injury in my knee joint that is not the same as the general bruising to both of my legs and my ribs.
The knee problem is something that I didn't notice at the hospital-- but once you are admitted ti the E.R. at a hospital they put you flat on a gurney, and you don't walk or stand for hours.
Which means I didn't notice knee pain at that time, as the swelling began and the adrenaline in my system from the crash wore off..

I will be seeing a personal injury lawyer who specializes in motorcycle accident cases tomorrow. I know his partner in that law practice from DUI work when I did criminal defense and DUI defense myself.

I anticipate that the book value on a 2007 ST 1300 that had 53,000 miles would be around two grand --with that kind of money I could either buy a new Chinese moped -scooter, or I'll be shopping for a used bike.

I might try a different style of bike : maybe a sport bike like the Kawasaki Ninja, in 500 or 650 size, as long as I can put a trunk / box on it for storage that might serve my needs .

I'll pray about it.

Speaking of storage boxes on a motorcycle, it was quite a shock regaining my senses laying flat on my back on the street and looking around and not seeing my motorcycle at first )because it was pushed a good distance away from me) but seeing parts of my motorcycle along with clothes and tools and all the other junk I had in my saddle bags and trunk scattered all around!

I remember seeing my gloves laying a few feet away from me and thinking
"What The **** --did the impact knock my gloves off my hands?? So then I looked at my feet because I wanted to see if the impact knocked me out of my boots too
(I have heard of this happening ).

But then I realized the gloves I saw where my spare gloves that came out of the glove box, not the gloves I was wearing which were still on my hands !

I work on and big red and white ambulance and people still “ don’t see” us.
Yeah, i've driven 18 wheel tractor trailer rigs-- 70 feet long, 13 feet tall weighing 80,000 pounds, and a shocking number of people pulled right out in front of me.
And in a way that makes me think they didn't see me, rather than thinking they saw me but they expected me to take evasive action not to kill them.

Several videos online where people pull out in front of fire trucks that are running all their lights and sirens ... ;)

Not everyone is the same. Here's one thing I learned from my accident. I was evaluated at the ER for a head injury. The docs found nothing. But it took me 30 days to piece together what happened.

I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out why my bike was pointed in the opposite direction than what I thought I'd been going. And then trying to gather up parts to ride it back to the motel. And of course, the bike was totaled, but my mind didn't register that part.

That headache was there for a reason.

$2k sounds very low to me. I was thinking more like double that or more. This time of year is bad to value a MC bc they always sell lower at the end of season. Whatever the case, get as much as you can out of them. You shouldn't have to compromise your riding due to someone else's negligence, but you fight for what you deserve going forward.

Sad to see a good bike go, but at least you're okay and walked away. We're all glad to see you're still around to tell the story. Heal up, and find your next good ride. Take care.

At least it wasn't your socks!!

Wow! Glad you are ok and on the road to recovery. I hope your knee is not too bad. When I fell off my bike and the ER guys checked me out, they sent me home with a broken fibula. They only x-rayed my lower leg, the fracture was about 3" above the top of the xray. I asked an ER doc friend about that and he said ER's are pretty good at finding life threatening things and not so good at the minor issues. There is a lot of pressure he said to get patients stabilized and pushed out to specialists if needed.

Consider this, the mass of the ST helped you out in this accident. Had you been on a smaller bike or scooter, you would probably still be in the hospital. If you can handle a big bike (I'm too short for an ST) go for one again.

Regarding @Uncle Phil's comment about a flashing light on the back. Both tonythecarguy and I had a Whelen M7 light on the back of our bikes. This is one of those lights you see on the aft end of ambulances. They are available used on ebay. The Whelen has, I think, 140 programs with various flashing modes and is so bright in daylight that fellow club members complained to me that it was too bright. Both Tony and I put a gray film over the lens to decrease the brightness.

Hope the guy who hit you has insurance. It's hard to squeeze juice out of a stone, lawyer or not.

Happy to hear you were not hurt too badly- I’m not usually a lawsuit happy person, but in this case, it’s clear negligence on the part of the truck driver- you got hurt, and you should sue for damages. Get your own insurance company involved as well. And get a good attorney.

The two extra solid-on taillights/ running lights that I added to the back WERE working, and on.
But my ambulance/fire truck red LED strobe light, which I rigged up myself to a momentary contact switch up on the front brake lever, was not working at the time. The wiring in the top box for that flashing brake light got PULLED LOOSE by a water bottle that flopped around in there when my bike tipped over while trying to put it up on the center stand a month prior.

I'm not entirely sure I would have been squeezing the front brake lever anyway. I often rest my hands by my sides at long red lights.
And my D.I.Y. flashing brake light wasn't wired to the bike's factory wiring harness or the rear brake switch, just the front one.

I don’t think you can wire a strobe to just one brake switch as there is just one positive wire (green/yellow ????) to both brake lights. Either switch energizes the brake lights.
