Can rear wheel splines be repaired?

Main casing and gear ratio/gear set differ...
Is it known how this would affect the performance/milage of an 1100? Not that I'd bother with a swap but say it worked for a 1300. If the final drive included a "taller" 5th I'd call it a win. Well unless it made 1st "taller" as well.

I've felt the ST and some other Hondas I've had would benefit from a 6th gear. I blame my 750 Duc loping along at freeway speeds and lower RPM than any Honda I've owned for spoiling me. My '85 V65 Sabre did come sort of close though.

I wonder if the GL1500 final would mount up to the ST. Many things are similar between the two images. It's really nice that we can share the drive plate.

It has been done by folks who wanted to run a car tire on the back of a ST1100, but there is some machining spacers and such to get it to work.

True dat. I should have said "too" tall. I know it affects all gears because it's between the transmission and the rear wheels. 1st is low enough but I've never considered what the ST would be like if 1st were a lower numerical ratio. 2-4 being taller wouldn't bother me a bit as the bike is already rolling and I won't be racing Mach IIIs or Hayabusas anytime soon.

During the '70s when gas was more scarce than expensive I knew someone who swapped out his 4.11 for a 2.73 (IIRC) and put large diameter truck tires on his ride pumped max for better mileage. He had a 4-spd but his engine didn't really have the grunt. Lots of slipping the clutch in first.

I had a 2-spd Slip n Slide that I replaced wit a TH-350 and a slightly taller RE. I changed it just before the crunch and was happy before during and after.

Fortunately these days gas isn't scarce. Just too damn expensive.

But it would require adapting the engine character/torque lines accordingly, or risk ending it up lame as a variomatic scooter... 🤔
Methinks the ST is highly precisely designed for the task: crossing European Alpine passes while not minding a few +100mph fast connections on the slab either...
2 up and luggage, smoothly passing through backsweeps in 2nd gear, etc...
 
To answer the original question I have learned through experience that with any kind of machine, or piece there of, there is no such thing as can not be repaired.

I have seen a damaged tooth on a differential ring gear welded and machined back to spec. I have also seen a whole new differential pinion gear made from a hunk of steel. The ring gear broken tooth repair wasn't really a big deal technically so while financially feasible it was still probably much more expensive to do than buying a new one, certainly more expensive than buying a used one. The manufacturing of the new pinion gear would have been horrendously and prohibitively expensive and would never have been done had there been a bill to pay at the end of it. In both cases these jobs were done over many months as time allowed as the proverbial G job, so no financial cost to the requestor.

With any repair if there is no possibility of getting a replacement part then there are only two real real questions to be asked;
- How much is having that part repaired worth to you?
- How much are you willing to pay to have it repaired?
Despite sounding like the same question they are not. The first involves factors unrelated to money like sentiment, emotion, the joy derived from use, etc..
The second is the cold hard reality of finances.
Often the first is infinite, and the second is very finite.

I don't think that's an issue for any reasonably accomplished rider. Liking it is a whole 'nother thing. But as long as a compatible drive is available - no worries.

There's seldom a one-size-fits-all. As I said I wish the ST had a 6th and I've felt that way about almost all my Hondas. One of my very favorite things about my V65S.

I believe Jay Leno spares no expense when he is restoring an old car. I do know that the automotive section of The Western Reserve Historical Society used to either machine or send out to have machined various missing parts of the old cars they were restoring. I say 'used to' because I was told this back in the 70's when my friend had his wedding reception in the museum and we talked to one of the mechanics before the event when we were pictured insome of the old cars. The museum today is vastly different than it was then.
