I got ripped off considering the prices you guys were paying! My first street bike was a brand new '81 CB750C that I bought in college in '81. It was $3400! I sold my '77 CJ5 to buy it. I sure wish that I had that Jeep back now.
When we were young we all got ripped off. Those motorcycle dealers were pro's at seeing the gleam in your eyes and the drool on your tee shirts. Back then the motto was if yah want to play you got to pay.

HA! Nothings Changed!
I think its swung back today in our favor. Motorcycle dealers are hurting right about now. I visited a Honda Dealer that still has his goldwings he ordered in april. I sat on the one and turned the key on and the display barely lit up because the bike had been there for so long. Battery was way down. No I think today we can call the shots. If we don't like the price we have Mega dealers who will sell that bike to us for thousands of dollars less.

Back in the early 80's you could call your own shots too, the only real difference I see is that the drooling isn't caused from us "having to have it", it's due to OLD AGE! :old1:

I bought my first bike in Nassau Bahamas in the spring of 1968. It was a Yamaha 250cc two stroke twin. Don't remember the model anymore.. Managed to wreck it while I was working over there. Repaired it and brought it back to the states and sold it to my brother in law who rode it for several years.

DS5 or 6? They came out with the DS7 250cc Twin in '72.

Well that RC5 Yamaha I bought back in 1973 was the last new bike I bought from a dealership. Like a new car, the depreciation once you drive a bike off the lot is crazy. And you don't even get that new car smell.

First bike was secondhand Honda C72 in 1969. Worked in the motorcycle trade and got all my bikes trade from 1971 on. Best buy was 1978 Suzuki GS1000 which handled like it was on rails after a 1976 Kawasaki Z900. Bought the GS for £1225 in the crate and assembled it myself. Best bike I have ever had until the ST1100.

1978 KZ400 out the door for $1,135.00.
I had a friend ride it home for me and got a learner's permit the following week.

1974 Suzuki GT750J in 1974 for $1100.00. It was my first "Sport Tourer".

2014 CB1100 Std in 2017 for $7000.00
Neither was in the warehouse cheap, but in the dealership waiting preparation and at substantial discounts.
As others have said it's a 72 and my very first bike in 1973, used with like 600 miles on it. I was 16. My dad helped me buy it and then pay him monthly. I was the king of the world on that bike. I rode it in the summer of 74 from Montana to Fort Collins, CO to work for my Uncles construction firm.

I had a good gig 1974 to around 1990 as I worked part time at a Honda motorcycle dealer while in school 1974-1977. I raced motocross, flat track, and had a great time working/hanging out at a family owned shop. I got a real job/career in 1977 but the Honda shop was still like family until the owner retired in 1990……bought all new bikes at cost + $100.00, free labor/shop use, and all parts at cost. Great times indeed,

And, to add to this thread……I bought a 1984 1100 Sabre with the Hondaline fairing for $3500.00 new in 1986.

First bike was 1965 Lambretta 175 TV motor-scooter bought in 1967 for $125.00. It was much faster than Honda 125 Super sport. Had a luggage rack that would carry a full-size suitcase. with spare tire mounted under the rack. Loved the spare tire feature. it would fit front or rear and took about 10 minutes to change!

I bought my leftover 2006 ST1300 in May of 2009 because everyone knows that Black is fastest. I told the dealer I'd give him a check for $10,000, not a penny more for anything. He said sold.

Way back...
And you can still find new in crate 2016 STP1300’s for that price if you search a bit.
Just think, you could do it again and roll another 300k on a new one.

To this day I have never ridden a minibike, scooter, or moped. The first thing I ever rode with two wheels and an engine was a CB100, and that was one ride. My second ride was my 18th birthday, when I bought a '72 CL450 and illegally rode it to the DMV and got my bike license.
